About the job:

The Language Center seeks 1-2 part-time teaching faculty to lead the new Vietnamese for Heritage Learners language sequence. This is a two-course, four-credit, fully online sequence

that promotes the development of cultural and linguistic skills in Vietnamese and has been designed with heritage learners in mind. It follows a curriculum that aims to increase student

proficiency in tone awareness, writing and spelling conventions, grammar, and sentence structure, alongside knowledge and participation in Vietnamese culture in American immigrant

communities and abroad. The teaching faculty will be responsible for language instruction and assessment. They will serve as part of a collaborative team working together to support and

celebrate Vietnamese heritage language students, and the wider Vietnamese community. Teaching faculty are assigned to teach by academic term (summer session, fall semester, spring

semester), based on programmatic needs. Teaching faculty with a Masters degree will be appointed as Teaching Specialists (9754); teaching faculty with a PhD will be appointed as Lecturers (9753).

Duties and responsibilities:

* Teach assigned language classes

* Engage with both synchronous and asynchronous course meetings and assignments

* Maintain office hours

* Engage in curriculum and test development

* Prepare and grade exams, including Language Proficiency Exams (LPEs)

* Collaborate with the course and assessment development teams on continual course

and test improvement

* Assist with the promotion of Vietnamese language to the university and local

heritage-language community

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

* MA or foreign equivalent degree

* Native or near-native proficiency in Vietnamese

* Vietnamese language teaching and/or Vietnamese language assessment experience

* Online teaching or learning experience or education

* Experience with the major dialects of Vietnam, and the ability to understand both

northern and southern dialects

* Knowledge of Vietnamese culture in both Vietnam and the United States

Preferred Qualifications:

* MA, PhD or foreign equivalent degree in a program related to language, linguistics or

cultural studies

* Vietnamese language teaching and Vietnamese language assessment experience

* Language materials development experience

* Experience designing placement and proficiency tests

* Experience working with Vietnamese heritage language learners

* Knowledge of the Twin-Cities Vietnamese heritage population
