Library Project Assistant – University of Minnesota
Location:
Minneapolis, MN. In-person only; remote work is not available. This temporary & casual employee position requires up to 14 hours per week, maximum. Hours are typically 7 hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the schedule subject to change weekly. Pay ranges from $20 to $22 per hour.
The Wangensteen Historical Library of Biology and Medicine (WHL) is a special collection within the Health Sciences Libraries. The Library Project Assistant will support WHL’s daily operations and special projects. Responsibilities include archival and artifact processing, workflow development, and assistance with front‑desk tasks.
Responsibilities- Archival Collections (40%):
Develop and refine workflows for processing WHL heritage and new archival collections using Archives Space and university best practices; create minimal level finding aids; collaborate on workflow documentation. - Artifact Collections (40%):
Improve organization of the artifact collection; create descriptions; locate missing artifacts; oversee photography workflows; refine acquisition workflows; evaluate housing and storage needs. - Daily Operations (20%):
Refine and assist with existing operational workflows; support pulling and shelving, acquisitions, and front‑desk duties as needed.
- Required:
Experience in rare book libraries or archives; experience with acquisition workflows or processing of materials; experience with historical artifact collections; problem‑solving and communication skills; independent decision‑making; ability to work independently and in a team; minimum GED or high‑school diploma. - Preferred:
Knowledge of Alma and other University of Minnesota Library systems, policies, and resources; library customer‑service experience; experience using Archives Space; project‑management experience.
Ability to move up to 40 pounds frequently and to move book carts up to 100 lbs.
Pay and BenefitsHourly pay: $20.00–$22.00. Retirement plan options are available for Civil Service, Faculty, Labor‑Represented, Professional & Administrative, and Temp Casual classifications.
