Servant Leader Interns for Freedom Schools
Temporary Summer Casual Position
$15.00+ per hour based on experience.
No benefits in this part‑time position, no sick leave or personal leave.
Employment is contingent on student enrollment.

Schedule:
Monday – Friday, approximately 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Children’s Defense Fund’s mission is to build community so young people grow up with dignity, hope, and joy. The CDF Freedom Schools program is a direct‑service initiative coordinated nationally by CDF in partnership with local community organizations. It is an educational and cultural enrichment program that provides summer options for children and strengthens family and community involvement. The program serves children in grades K‑12 for six to eight weeks and focuses on reading, conflict resolution, and social action through an integrated reading curriculum aligned to Common Core State Standards.
Job DescriptionThe Junior Servant Leader Intern (JSLI) supports the Servant Leader Intern (SLI) in classroom duties and scholar management. The JSLI helps maintain site decorum and a positive Freedom School culture. The intern must be a high school student aged 15 and over.
Responsibilities- Assist the Servant Leader Intern (SLI) in maintaining and supporting a strong classroom culture of teamwork and open communication
- Assist and participate in morning Harambee (Community Meeting)
- Assist SLI’s in classroom prep and breakdown
- Facilitate snack and bathroom breaks
- Support scholars in staying on task
- Support parent empowerment evening events
- Participate in a community project
- Turn in attendance to the Site Coordinator
- Organize and manage the supply room and maintain the space
- Support the RFS Finale, adhering to Freedom School’s guidelines and instructions
- Support Volunteers Field‑Trip & Activities
- Organize and manage the morning pep rally, “Harambee”, including daily reminders, maintaining Harambee space, and greeting guest readers
- Be active during on‑duty lunch, hallway transitions, and outside play
- Other duties as assigned by the assistant site coordinator or site coordinator
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to focus, listen, and be a team player
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Mature and professional demeanor
- Ability to assist with the management of difficult or emotional situations
- Prioritizes and plans work activities and uses time efficiently
- Ability to work in the summer heat, lift at least 50 pounds, and participate actively in field trips and activities as needed
- Enthusiasm for the CDF Freedom Schools program and commitment to children’s advocacy and servant leadership
- Strong appreciation for individual & cultural history and willingness to be open to and respectful of all cultures
