Job Description SUMMARY / PURPOSE
The Carpentry Instructor is responsible for providing quality instruction to diverse adult learners aligned with the Council on Occupational Education’s (COE) standards for Pre-Apprentice Construction certification. This position works continuously to support Summit’s mission to prepare students for living wage jobs through training, curriculum development, and classroom management.

- Teach program course objectives as established by Summit Academy OIC.
- Develop and maintain curriculum, course descriptions, lesson plans and course outlines that ensure student safety, are developmentally appropriate and appeal to a variety of learning styles.
- Teach adult students in a competency-based format through lectures, demonstration and other recognized instructional techniques.
- Prepare students for employment and continued education through modeling learning and behavior consistent with industry expectations, and occasional delivery of personal development classes and brown-bag lunch curriculum.
- Evaluate student progress and maintain student records, including up-to-date student attendance records, grades, progress reports and course files.
- Monitor safety of students, classroom, and tools according to safety guidelines.
- Coordinate, lead and supervise student field trips to advance student learning.
- Manage tool and material inventory necessary to meet course objectives.
- Substitute teach for other instructors as necessary.
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of business and industry and recommend modification of program objectives and curriculum where appropriate.
- Participate in student orientation and assemblies, student conference, faculty/staff committees, unit staff meetings, organizational staff meetings and other meetings as appropriate and/or required.
- Expert knowledge of carpentry and/or construction.
- Ability to teach people of various abilities and diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent oral communication and presentation skills.

WORK ENVIRONMENTThis job operates in a professional school setting which requires instructors to maintain professional appearance and attitude. The work environment is fast paced and requires time management and prioritization of job duties. The work environment includes classrooms, administrative offices, training labs and spaces, storage areas, and outdoor training and work areas. The role regularly works in active lab environments where tools, machinery, construction materials, and training equipment are in use.
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to dust, noise, varying temperatures, and typical construction‑related conditions.
- Sit and stand for extended periods while supporting training operations, meetings, and student activities.
- Walk or move throughout classrooms, labs, and outdoor training areas.
- Occasionally lift, carry, and move training materials, tools, and equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
- Frequently bend, reach, crouch, and work around tools, equipment, and training stations.
- Ability to use a computer and general office equipment.
- Work safely in environments where construction tools, equipment, and machinery are present in addition to operating different tools and equipment.
- Ability to speak to large public audiences.
- Willingness to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
- Ability to work with natural and synthetic materials.
This is a full‑time, exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). It is not eligible for overtime pay. Hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Evening and weekend hours may be required to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
