POHI 1:1 Support

Summary

Responsible for providing a variety of services to assist students with special needs in a learning environment; assists MPS staff to develop and implement appropriate individualized lessons and activities for students with disabilities; promotes student independence, academic and social inclusion, as well as self‑advocacy skills; helps students to meet their therapy and education goals.

Essential Functions
  • Provide support services to children with moderate to severe disabilities enrolled in MPS; perform duties within scope of authority and training, and in compliance with MPS policies, quality standards, and the Standards of Effective Instructional Support for Educational Assistants.
  • Assist MPS staff to facilitate educational functions and other services to maintain a safe, inclusive, and productive learning environment in the least restrictive environment possible; work with students to improve personal skills and reinforce classroom learning.
  • Assist students in learning processes; apply Prevent, Teach, Reinforce Behavior Intervention Plans, reinforce positive behavior, provide individual instruction, encourage opportunities for peer socialization.
  • Monitor student activities, promote respect, explain social norms and disciplinary consequences, de‑escalate personal confrontations, and enforce District policies and rules of conduct.
  • Monitor assigned students and record data for academic and behavioral assessments; maintain files and keep records of student progress and activities.
  • Maintain behavior documentation, written observations, and anecdotal information files for Support and Advocacy for Independent Living Program (SAIL), Individualized Education Program (IEP), and Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA).
  • Monitor work, correct papers and transition students for medications, meals, buses and classes.
  • Attend to and provide for students’ daily hygiene, personal and health‑related cares, as directed by licensed staff.
  • Promote student independence in community, recreational, school and leisure activities, and vocational training.
  • Report learning problems, behavioral issues, and other concerns to supervisor or Principal.
  • Prepare the classroom environment and material to be utilized by students; provide assistance with students in classrooms, special projects, and after‑school programs.
  • Provide customer service to parents and guardians, answer questions, and explain school rules.
  • Demonstrate courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; act in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
  • Enthusiastically promote the Superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality of work‑related issues, records and MPS information.
Class Designations

Bilingual:
Interpret and translate all information relating to the educational programming for students who have both Special Education and English Language Learner needs. Requires oral and written fluency in English and a second language and bicultural background. Work in conjunction with Special Education and regular education teachers.
