Summary

Responsible for providing a variety of services to assist students with special needs in a learning environment; assists MPS staff to develop and implement appropriate individualized lessons and activities for students with disabilities; promotes student independence, academic and social inclusion, and self‑advocacy skills; helps students meet their therapy and education goals.

Essential Functions
  • Provide support services to children with moderate to severe disabilities, performing duties within scope of authority and training and in compliance with MPS policies.
  • Assist MPS staff to facilitate educational functions and other services, maintaining a safe, inclusive, least restrictive environment sensitive to students’ individual needs and legal rights.
  • Assist students in the learning process; implement behavior intervention plans, reinforce positive behavior, provide individual instruction and encourage peer socialization.
  • Monitor student activities, promote respect, explain social norms and disciplinary consequences, de‑escalate personal confrontations, enforce district policies and rules of conduct.
  • Monitor assigned students and record data for academic and behavioral assessments; maintain files of student progress and activities.
  • Maintain behavior documentation, written observations and anecdotal information for the SAIL program, IEPs, and FBAs.
  • Monitor work, correct papers and transition students for medications, meals, buses and classes.
  • Attend to and provide for students’ daily hygiene, personal and health‑related care as directed by licensed staff.
  • Promote student independence in community, recreational, school, leisure activities and vocational training.
  • Report learning problems, behavioral issues, and other concerns to supervisor or principal.
  • Prepare the classroom environment and materials for students; assist with special projects and after‑school programs.
  • Provide customer service to parents and guardians, answer questions, and explain school rules.
  • Demonstrate courteous, cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors and MPS staff, fostering a harmonious workplace.
  • Enthusiastically promote the superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality of work‑related issues, records and MPS information.
Class Designation – Bilingual Support

Interpret and translate all information related to educational programming for students with both Special Education and English Language Learner needs. Requires oral and written fluency in English and a second language; bicultural background. Work in conjunction with special education and regular education teachers.

Intervention SEA

Provide support in the least restrictive environment so that students can be successful in resource settings; ensure that behavior support plans are implemented with fidelity. Personal transportation required as the position may move from site to site.

SEA Cadre

Act as a reserve/substitute Special Education Assistant; assigned on an emergency basis to support schools/programs in high‑need situations across disability areas. Personal transportation required.
