About the Job
The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo-Engineering (CEGE) at the University of Minnesota seeks a Department Head. The candidate should have a distinguished record of scholarship and research, strong leadership and management abilities, an interest in promoting sponsored research, mentoring faculty, and a commitment to undergraduate and graduate education. The role requires collaboration with diverse faculty, staff, students, administrators, alumni, and industry representatives.
ResponsibilitiesDepartmental Leadership
- In collaboration with department faculty, promote a vision and mission consistent with departmental strengths and with the College and University.
- Maintain an equitable and inclusive work environment for CEGE faculty and staff.
- Monitor the administrative, financial, and space management components of the department.
- Enhance recognition of the department on national and international stages.
- Raise funds from alumni and external partners to support the department’s missions.
- Understand the financial needs and stability of the department and work with leadership on related matters.
- Support, provide oversight and promote faculty teaching, research, and service activities.
- Lead faculty recruitment efforts, identify areas of current need and future development.
- Partner with College and University offices to facilitate promotion and tenure processes.
- Interface frequently with faculty, providing mentoring, guidance, and effort redirection.
- Oversee curriculum delivery and development with faculty and assess educational outcomes.
- Ensure academic excellence and strong career outcomes for the undergraduate program.
- Provide stewardship to the graduate program, engaging faculty on requirements, advising, and growth.
- Serve on the Dean’s Administrative Council with other department heads.
- Report directly to the Dean and work with other college leadership to achieve goals.
- Participate in collegiate and university budget processes.
- Attend and participate in critical activities identified by the Dean.
Required Qualifications
- Doctorate in engineering or a relevant scientific discipline.
- Outstanding record in research, teaching, and service at a level commensurate with a tenured full professor.
- Ability to create, communicate, and implement a vision for the department’s future.
- Strong leadership, management, and communication abilities.
- Ability to maintain and nurture a collaborative and collegial culture.
- Recognize and promote a diversity of strengths and excellence among faculty.
- Willingness and ability to advocate for the department’s needs.
- Interest in encouraging multidisciplinary collaborations.
- Deep commitment to undergraduate and graduate education.
- Ability to work with diverse groups of stakeholders.
Pay Range: $175,000 to $230,000, depending on education, qualifications, and experience.
This position is not eligible for H-1B or Green Card sponsorship.
