Position Overview:
This is a one-year replacement teaching position for academic year . The appointee will be expected to teach three courses, plus directed studies, Medical School electives and lectures. The successful candidate will teach two existing upper-level undergraduate courses, "Technology and Medicine" and "Women, Health, and History." The third course will be determined in consultation with the Program. The appointee will be an active member of the Graduate Program in the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine (HSTM) and may work with HSTM graduate students.
Appointments in the Program in the History of Medicine are for 12 months, consistent with the Medical School calendar, with the position to run from Aug. 24, 2026 to Aug. 23, 2027.
This position is based on campus. Per UMN policy, work may be done remotely when appropriate and approved by your manager. All UMN employees are expected to follow applicable public health and safety procedures.
Job Duties /Responsibilities:
Areas of Specialization:
History of 19th and/or 20th century Western medicine broadly construed, with capacity for teaching courses related to women/gender and health history and the history of technology and medicine.
Areas of Competence:
Ability to teach undergraduate courses in the history of 19th- and 20th-century medicine. Candidates will be assessed according to overall academic preparation in the history of medicine, the relevance of their research to the Program in the History of Medicine's academic priorities and the field of inquiry, evidence of commitment to teaching, and skills as a teacher.
The person in this position will:
* Prepare instructional materials (some materials will be provided)
* Administer all aspects of the lecture-portion of the course finalize the syllabus
* Deliver regular, in-person, active learning class meetings (lectures)
* Develop and maintain the course Canvas page
* Create meaningful in-class learning experiences
* Create formative and summative assessments
* Grade student work
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
* PhD in history of medicine or a related field at time of application.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Teaching experience; track record of research presentation and/or publication.
About the Department
Since its founding in 1967, the Medical School's Program in the History of Medicine has been dedicated to research and teaching in the intellectual, political, cultural, and social history of disease, health care, and medical science. The history of medicine provides students with a historical perspective on the role health, medicine, and disease play in society today. It prepares students to think critically about historical and contemporary health issues.

Pay and Benefits
Pay Range: $70,000-$85,000 annually; depending on education/qualifications/experience
