Position: Recreation Specialist - Teen Programs (Zanewood Recreation Center)

Brooklyn Park Recreation and Parks Department is seeking a highly motivated, team-oriented individual to serve as a Recreation Specialist for teen programs. The role focuses on implementing, leading, and evaluating recreation programs, events, and field trips for youth aged 12‑17, based at Zanewood Recreation Center. The specialist will work under the general supervision of the Teen Program Specialist, support program participation, and eliminate barriers to engagement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plan, lead, and evaluate teen recreation programs, including sports, arts, team‑building activities, and leadership development.
  • Create a welcoming and supportive space where all youth feel valued and encouraged to participate.
  • Ensure safety and well‑being of participants by following established procedures, policies, and protocols; implement conflict resolution strategies and report concerns.
  • Build strong community relationships with schools, nonprofits, and local leaders to expand opportunities and partnerships.
  • Plan and evaluate recreational activities for youth and teens under 18 years old.
  • Identify needs and refer teens to the Prevention and Intervention Specialist when support services are required.
  • Coordinate special events and pop‑up teen activities throughout Brooklyn Park.
  • Supervise teen program locations and participants.
  • Recruit, register, and retain teen participants through outreach, school partnerships, and family engagement.
  • Assist the Teen Program Specialist in reporting deliverables, evaluation, and program oversight.
  • Attend required staff development trainings and meetings to stay current on best practices in youth engagement and recreation.
  • Maintain clean and organized program spaces, ensuring safety standards are met during setup, cleanup, and event execution.
  • Participate in first aid and emergency training as provided.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum and Desired Qualifications Education

Undergraduate level studies or coursework in recreation, youth development, education, or a related field.

Experience

None required.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position may be considered.

  • Demonstrated relationship‑building skills with teens, families, and community members from diverse environments.
  • Ability to respond promptly, maturely, and professionally to emergencies, conflicts, and behavioral challenges.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Capability to maintain order and security in program settings.
  • Independent work capability with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and outdoor activities as needed.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and inclusive workplace practices.
  • Ability to provide customer service that meets or exceeds expectations.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience supervising seasonal staff and volunteers.
  • Passion for working with teens and experience leading youth programming.
  • Experience working with youths and teens with disabilities.
  • Experience working with youth facing high barriers from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Fluency in Spanish, Hmong, Russian, Somali, Lao, or Vietnamese is a plus.
  • A valid driver’s license.
Working Conditions

The role is seasonal, non‑benefited, averaging 15‑38 hours per week. Work primarily occurs Monday‑Friday evenings (1 pm–9 pm) with possible weekend shifts (9 pm–7 pm) and occasional daytime shifts. Physical demands include lifting equipment weighing 10–30 lbs, setting up recreation equipment, and operating independently with participants. The position requires verbal communication and decision‑making in the field.

Background Check

The City may require a criminal background check and/or qualifications check. Applicants must sign an informed consent form for the City to obtain necessary background information; applicants who do not sign will not be considered.

Employment and Benefits

Regular, full‑time City employees (40+ hours per week) are eligible for a benefits package that includes vacation, sick leave, holidays, health insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, retirement plans, flexible spending accounts, employee assistance, and on‑site fitness facilities. Part‑time and seasonal employees receive state‑mandated sick leave, but full benefits are limited to full‑time positions.
