Special Education Team Lead - High School
This position will provide leadership in the development, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of programs for students receiving special education services and/or special services in accordance with state and federal law. Work is performed under the general direction of the Assistant Director of Special Education. The job description is below outlining qualifications and duties.
Special Education Leads serve as members of the district special education leadership team and collaborate closely with the special services department, principals, parents, teachers, and related service providers. Sped Leads meet monthly with the Assistant Director of Special Education. Occasionally, meeting with the Director of Student Services.
Essential Position Functions:
- Behavior:
Provide guidance and support with creating behavior plans; ensure behavior plans are being followed with fidelity; make sure behavior plans are shared with gen ed/admin, etc.; communicate with admin a list of students who have a BIP; ensure that data is being collected and responded to on a systematic basis; collaborate with building and district administration regarding discipline for Special Education students;
process and support students who need co-regulation; follow-up with general ed and special education staff after behavior incidents to process student situations; attend manifestation determination meetings. - Due Process:
Monitor for professional and student-centered language usage; support Due Process Review due process paperwork for newly hired staff; support with annual file reviews; serve as the case manager for initial evaluations; review service minutes & para support on IEPs and compare to schedules; support evaluation testing as needed; collaborate with school psychologists regarding initial evaluations and help the team determine who will be the case manager after the evaluation is complete;
regularly collaborating with the Due Process Specialist and/or Due Process Support within the building. - Scheduling:
Lead the team in developing the special education schedule; collaborate with the school office regarding the schedule; lead team discussions regarding caseloads, schedules, para schedules, etc.; ensure prep/due process time is provided per contract; schedule and implement testing schedules; ensure all IEP accommodations are met. - Paraeducators:
Develop, schedule, and serve as contact for para educator staff; adjust schedules to ensure student needs are met; adjust schedules when there are absences; schedule, create an agenda, and lead monthly para meetings; collaborate with Special Education Assistant Director regarding professional development for para educators; lead the process for ensuring all student plans are covered during para educator absences; support para subs when they are on site;
train in new para educators; ensure all new para educator training forms are completed and submitted; assist in para educator evaluations. - Building-wide SpEd Support:
Monitor the implementation of educational programs for students with disabilities, assuring that each student is provided a free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment; support team with holding each other accountable to following the team established norms; conduct on-going workload analysis of caseloads; serve as a special education representative for SST/SAT; collaborate with the school office and/or Special Education administration regarding students who have moved in;
attend transition meetings for incoming new students; school they are transitioning to will amend the IEP (within SANB); support transition for students from building to building; manage the budget given for the Department for the purchase of incentives; lead the ordering process for protocols, materials, supplies, curriculum (consumables); lead department team/child study meetings; attend grade-level team meetings to continue to grow partnerships between general education teachers and special education;
partner with teams from other buildings to learn more about their practices/services/programming in order to support…
