Summary:

Provides students with instructional support and assistance and supervises students in the lunchroom, playground, or other designated locations to insure a positive, safe environment.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervises large groups of students in the lunchroom, playground, or the classroom.
  • Directs movement of groups to and from classrooms, playground, and lunchroom in a safe and organized manner.
  • Assumes responsibility for monitoring student behavior; ensures student safety, administers appropriate consequences in response to unacceptable behavior, encourages peaceful resolution of conflicts, and reports unacceptable behavior to the principal, as needed.
  • Makes suggestions for and supervises group games and activities on the playground.
  • Assumes responsibility for outdoor play equipment; reports safety hazards.
  • Completes routine paperwork and performs record-keeping activities related to monitoring activities.
  • Attends to minor medical needs including carrying and dispensing band-aids, providing cloths for nosebleeds, and other minor needs.
  • Works with students individually or in small groups in and out of regular classrooms under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
  • Reinforces the instructional plan laid out by the classroom teacher.
  • Provides instructional assistance and motivates students in all subject areas.
  • Plans and prepares study aids such as flash cards and worksheets.
  • Assists teacher with classroom activities; leads breakout sessions.
  • Promotes and supports the overall mission of the District by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with public and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and Experience:

Two (2) years post-secondary education OR a passing Para Pro Score. One (1) year of curriculum support experience. OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation. None.

Required Knowledge and Skills Required Knowledge:
District policies and procedures. Applicable policies, procedures and regulations covering specific areas of assignment. Learning and behavioral management techniques. Local community resources and regional community services programs. Computer applications related to the work. Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Required Skills:

Maintaining composure and working effectively under classroom conditions. Administering educational and school support programs. Communicating effectively with children. Operating a personal computer using standard and specialized software. Communicating effectively verbally and in writing. Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities. Commitment to the District mission, which is to ensure high quality, innovative, challenging education where all learners are valued and respected.
