Position: Packaging Engineer (Consultant)

Role Description

Boldt Smith Packaging Consultants is searching for an experienced Packaging Engineer that will work as a Packaging Engineering Consultant for our clients. This travel-heavy Hybrid position will be based out of Fargo, ND or Minneapolis, MN will require a balance of technical aptitude in structural packaging and the ability to navigate a large corporate enterprise combining hands on skills and the ability to communicate with executives.

This is not your typical position. We are looking for a self-motivated, entrepreneurial professional who thrives in a fast-paced, client-facing environment.

We are looking for an individual striving to be an A+ Packaging Engineer.

This role is initially structured as a 1-year term position.

At the conclusion of the term, high performing candidates may be considered for a full-time, ongoing role based on business needs and individual performance.

Key Accountabilities/Outcomes
  • Analyze current packaging related problems and locate root cause issues
  • Develop and design solutions to these packaging problems using the best materials possible
  • Create a financial analysis to justify recommended packaging designs that will include variables such as material, labor and freight costs.
  • Manage large, long-term projects with complicated and changing variables
  • Manage testing to ISTA and custom protocols
  • Oversee line trials, acquiring stakeholder feedback, reporting results, and optimizing based of results
  • Present material in a professional and efficient manner
  • Work closely with internal and customer contacts utilizing strong interpersonal communication skills
Requirements
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Packaging Engineering or a packaging related science
  • 5 years minimum of Packaging Engineering experience in the commercial or industrial sector.
  • Solid understanding of packaging materials and their function and uses throughout the supply chain

Focus on stretch wrap, wood, corrugated, banding, and labels

  • Basics in Freight Costing analysis and the effect Packaging Optimization can have on it
  • Solid understanding of Sustainability initiatives that will be driving change in the sector
  • Capability to identify cost savings opportunities and calculate ROI opportunities
  • Experience with manufacturing workstations and how part presentation can impact flow
  • Service part distribution experience is a plus
  • Working Knowledge of Transit Testing Standards, Line Trials, and reporting on these activities
  • Personality and mindset to do whatever is necessary to exceed our customer’s expectations
  • Understanding and ability to manage effects of packaging changes on a supply chain
  • Excellent verbal and electronic communication skills with the understanding of how to best relate to a person at a VP-level or a line associate
  • Advanced knowledge and use of Excel and Power Point
Physical Requirements
  • Must hold or be able to obtain a valid passport
  • Ability to stand and/or walk for long periods of time
  • Ability to bend, squat, climb stairs and lift frequently
  • Ability to travel up to 50% to clients’ locations, job sites, and suppliers as needed
