Program / Project Manager, Environmental Manager
Position Summary
Merjent, Inc. is seeking a Senior Project Manager to lead permitting and development projects for wind, solar, and battery storage in the Upper Midwest. Candidates must possess technical understanding of federal, state, and local permitting regulations and have direct experience developing permit applications.
Responsibilities- Serve as the Project Manager or Deputy Project Manager for power sector projects (solar, wind, battery storage), which may vary in size and complexity.
- Work with other Power Sector Project Managers to build and collaboratively manage project teams for permitting, field surveys, and agency and stakeholder outreach.
- Effectively manage project budget and schedule, and mitigate project risk through implementation of standard project management processes and tools.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key clients.
- Collaborate with other Power Sector Project Managers and the Power Sector Lead to meet the company’s strategic plan goals.
- Encourage leadership succession through team building, positive reinforcement, training, mentoring, and professional development.
- Collaborate with company leadership to ensure project teams have the necessary staffing and tools.
- Review project‑related deliverables to provide quality assurance and ensure client expectations are met.
- Actively participate in the proposal process and development of Power Sector projects, including marketing activities.
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental studies, environmental engineering, geography, land use planning, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience or familiarity with permitting processes through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), federal land management agencies, State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPO), State Public Utility/Service Commissions, or other federal, state, or local regulatory agencies, preferably with work completed in the identified power industries.
- Experience preparing and obtaining county/local Conditional/Special Use Permits is a plus.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience or familiarity with project management and/or deputy project management preferred.
- Knowledge, interest, experience, or advanced degrees in environmental law, planning, anthropology/archaeology, hydrology, biology, wetland ecology, or other technical fields is a plus.
- Excellent oral communication and technical writing skills.
- Strong self‑starter tendencies and excellent organizational/task management skills.
- Ability to adapt quickly and work well under pressure, both in large teams and one‑on‑one.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to analyze, organize, and interpret data from multiple sources and translate that information into direct, easy‑to‑understand written deliverables.
- Detail‑oriented with excellent problem‑solving skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); technical editing experience is a plus.
- Willingness to travel domestically as needed (0–20%).
This is a full‑time, benefits‑eligible opportunity that can be based anywhere in the United States. The anticipated annual salary ranges from $127,800 to $163,800, depending on qualifications and experience, and positions are bonus eligible. All full‑time employees receive four weeks of paid vacation, ten paid holidays, and a generous benefits and compensation package.
