Position: Department Manager - Civil and Environmental Engineering (Minneapolis)

Description Environmental challenges for our clients are increasingly complex and addressing them requires experienced leaders who can combine technical excellence, project strategy, client partnership, and business growth. Burns & McDonnell Environmental Services Global Practice is seeking a proven leader to lead expansion of our Civil & Environmental Engineering business line in the Upper Midwest Region.

As Department Manager, you will be a key senior leader in developing and inspiring teams, leading and capturing pursuits, delivering high-quality engineering solutions for our clients, and be responsible for the department’s overall performance. You will influence strategy, mentor teams, build client relationships, and set the tone for exceptional project execution across multiple delivery methods including planning only, design-bid-build, design-build and EPC in various markets including industrial, local government, utilities, commercial, and others.

The department leads and supports a wide range of projects including solid waste and resource recovery, industrial water/wastewater, coal combustion residuals, general civil site design, water resources/stormwater management and treatment, nature-based solutions and constructed wetland treatment systems, stream restoration, and other civil/environmental engineering projects.

What You’ll Do
  • Provide leadership to the team, and strategic guidance for the overall department.
  • Identify, pursue, and win civil/environmental engineering opportunities that align with regional and national strategies with a focus on construction and EPC opportunities.
  • Lead and support teams in business development including go-no-go discussions, contract and risk review process, proposal development, interview preparation, and overall capture planning.
  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with clients.
  • Stay informed on market drivers, client needs, regulatory changes, and emerging trends, and promote thought leadership through industry presentations, associations, etc.
  • Serve as the technical and strategic advisor for project teams, reviewing key deliverables and guiding technical approaches.
  • Monitor and manage the allocation of staff resources to projects for successful execution and meeting department goals and metrics.
  • Manage department financials with a focus on maintaining profitability and meeting business plan goals/metrics.
  • Lead and manage projects overseeing scope, schedule, budget, and quality to ensure projects meet or exceed client expectations.
  • Commit to safety being the number one priority and follow and promote Burns & McDonnell’s Live Safer approach.
  • Mentor and manage staff from assistant engineers to senior Project Managers and Section Managers with a focus on career and skill development, work direction, and knowledge sharing.
  • Responsible for recruiting and retaining top talent and conducting performance reviews of staff.
  • Work collaboratively with department managers across the global practice and other regional offices.
  • Prepare and present department updates to leadership.
  • Participate in annual business planning process and establish goals for the regional Civil/Environmental Engineering practice.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, Construction, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant civil or environmental engineering experience, including project management responsibilities.
  • Previous leadership and/or management experience is preferable.
  • Demonstrated experience leading civil/environmental engineering projects and project teams across various markets (industrial, utilities, state/local government, etc.)
  • Position requires the ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change.
