Automation & Mechatronics Engineer, Systems Engineer, Electrical Engineering
Location: Twin Cities, Minnesota
Position Title: Senior Building Automation Engineer
The Opportunity:This is a highly visible, high-impact engineering leadership role within a growing building automation group that is still early in its lifecycle. The Senior Building Automation Engineer will step into a critical position at a pivotal moment, taking ownership of the full engineering function as the current senior engineer transitions toward retirement. This individual will immediately influence project execution, technical accuracy, profitability, and scalability of the business.
With active projects, awarded work, and significant bids expected to convert, this role directly removes a major operational bottleneck and enables the business to continue growing without sacrificing quality or margins. The engineer who takes this role will not only execute work but help shape engineering standards, workflows, and long-term direction for the building automation group.
This organization operates a building automation and controls group within a long-established, family‑owned mechanical services platform. The broader business brings decades of industry experience and offers fully integrated in‑house capabilities including mechanical, plumbing, pipe fitting, electrical, and panel shop operations. The building automation group is a newer but rapidly growing division that has already demonstrated strong momentum through repeat customers and a growing backlog.
Ownership is described as supportive, forward‑thinking, and willing to invest in people, tools, and training when the value is clear. This creates an entrepreneurial environment where individuals can make a meaningful impact and grow alongside the business.
The role reports to the leader of the building automation group, who is actively involved in sales, operations, and overall management. The hiring manager has prior engineering experience and a deep understanding of the technical demands of the role. This individual is the primary decision‑maker and is looking to offload day‑to‑day engineering responsibilities to allow greater focus on strategic growth and team leadership.

- Convert sales estimates and concepts into complete BAS designs and approved submittals
- Develop controller layouts, control networks, addressing schemes, and system architectures
- Create and refine sequences of operation for mechanical equipment
- Coordinate with architects, engineers, programmers, electricians, and field technicians
- Order materials and track delivery to support installation schedules
- Provide ongoing engineering support throughout project execution
- Resolve field issues and design conflicts as they arise
- Maintain accurate documentation from design through project closeout
- Produce final as‑built documentation reflecting actual installation conditions
- Participate in internal and external project meetings as needed
- Proven experience engineering building automation systems for construction projects
- Demonstrated ability to independently create BAS submittals
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, BAS hardware, software, and control strategies
- Working knowledge of BACnet and IP‑based control networks
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast‑paced environment
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and critical‑thinking skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal oversight
