Job OverviewAs a Principal Mechanical Engineer at Medtronic, you will play a crucial role in the lifecycle management of our Neuromodulation and Pelvic Health product portfolio. You will ensure the ongoing performance, reliability, and quality of our products, working cross‑functionally with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and service teams.
Responsibilities- Problem Solving and Root Cause Analysis – troubleshoot technical problems, determine and execute resolution plans.
- Documentation and Change Management – create and maintain the necessary documentation for consistent manufacture, generate Bills of Materials, execute change orders, write engineering reports and protocols, and prepare Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (FMEA).
- Supplier Management – interact with suppliers, participate in Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) processes, perform tolerance analyses, and manage end‑of‑life (EOL) component replacement while sustaining current design intents.
- Engineering Test Development – design and perform engineering tests, measurements, and analysis such as force/deflection tests, weight scales, and use of measurement tools (dial indicators, height gauges, CMM, gauge blocks, accelerometers).
- Service Support – collaborate with the Service team on service plans and user manual updates.
- Project Collaboration – work with R&D, Quality, Regulatory, Operations, and Marketing to ensure projects are executed according to Medtronic processes in a matrix environment.
- Mentoring – guide junior engineers and drafters, fostering a collaborative team environment.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a technically related field, preferably Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience.
- or an advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
- or a PhD with 3 years of relevant experience.
- 4+ years of medical device engineering experience.
- 5+ years of Mechanical Design Engineering experience.
- 5+ years of Manufacturing Engineering experience.
- Experience with medical capital equipment.
- Proficiency with Solidworks 3D Modeling Software, PLM, Agile product lifecycle management, and Microsoft Office products.
- Design skills including drafting standards, design progression, GD&T in compliance with ASTM Y14.5.
- Prior experience with motion system design (belt drives, ball screws, stepper motors, DC servo motors, pulley mechanisms, linkages, drive cables, gears, motors, linear and rotary bearings, sensors, and complex electromechanical assemblies).
- Experience with mechatronics.
- Mechanical fabrication experience (CNC machining/turning, injection molding, rim, thermoform).
- Solid knowledge of regulatory requirements such as FDA QSR, IEC 60601, ISO 13485, 14971, 62304, and the Medical Device Directive.
