Position SummaryThe Senior Laser Technician is responsible for the safe, efficient, and functional operation of laser processing equipment within the R&D organization. This position supports the development, prototyping, and production transfer of medical device components through advanced laser manufacturing processes. Primary responsibilities include developing and executing manual and CAD-based programs for femtosecond and fiber laser cutting of tube, flat stock, and complex components.
The individual will assist in the design, fabrication, and qualification of tooling, fixtures, and work holding solutions required to support development activities. Additional responsibilities include setup, operation, troubleshooting, and optimization of laser welding systems for joining metallic components and assemblies. The role will also support laser marking operations, including the development of permanent identification marks, UDI markings, logos, and other precision marking applications on a variety of materials.
The Senior Laser Technician will collaborate closely with engineers, quality personnel, and manufacturing teams to develop robust laser processes, document process parameters, conduct process characterization studies, and support equipment qualifications and validations. The position is expected to maintain a high level of technical expertise in laser processing technologies while ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.
- Operate, program, and troubleshoot femtosecond, fiber, and marking laser systems.
- Develop CAD and manual programs for precision laser cutting applications.
- Set up and optimize laser welding processes for medical device components and assemblies.
- Develop and validate laser marking processes for identification, traceability, and branding requirements.
- Design and assist in fabrication of fixtures, tooling, and work holding solutions.
- Perform process development, characterization, and optimization activities.
- Support equipment qualification (IQ/OQ/PQ), process validation, and engineering studies.
- Maintain accurate process documentation, work instructions, and development records.
- Troubleshoot equipment, process, and quality issues while implementing corrective actions.
- Ensure compliance with company safety policies and laser safety requirements.
- Support prototype, pilot, and production builds as required.
- Provide technical training and mentorship to operators, technicians, and new employees on laser equipment, processes, and department procedures.
- Support customer and business development activities by producing laser samples, prototypes, and process demonstrations when required.
- Collaborate with Engineering and Manufacturing teams to develop manufacturing procedures, cost estimates, and process quotations for new opportunities.
- Evaluate, recommend, and implement alternative manufacturing methods and process improvements to enhance quality, efficiency, and manufacturability.
- Research, evaluate, and recommend capital equipment, tooling, and technology investments to support organizational growth and capability expansion.
- Maintain preventive maintenance schedules and coordinate service activities to ensure maximum equipment uptime and performance.
- Partner with production planning and manufacturing teams to prioritize work, manage machine utilization, and support customer delivery requirements.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance across cross‑functional teams while fostering a culture of safety, quality, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
- Support pre‑production planning activities, including review of manufacturing requirements, tooling readiness, and process risk assessments.
- Assist in developing and maintaining accurate manufacturing documentation, including bills of materials (BOMs), setup instructions, and process specifications.
