Senior Tooling Engineer
We are seeking an experienced Senior Tooling Engineer to lead the design, development, and validation of molds, tooling and fixtures for high-volume manufacturing. The role focuses on ensuring tooling is robust, manufacturable, and optimized for cost, quality and cycle time. The Senior Tooling Engineer will collaborate with product development, manufacturing, and suppliers to deliver reliable tooling solutions, drive continuous improvement, and mentor junior engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of molds, tooling, jigs and fixtures for injection molding, compression molding and 3D molding processes.
- Create detailed 3D models and manufacturing drawings using Solid Works and AutoCAD to convey geometry, tolerances and materials.
- Develop mold tooling concepts, core/cavity designs, cooling systems and ejection mechanisms to meet product and production requirements.
- Work with internal manufacturing teams and external tool shops to oversee fabrication, assembly, and commissioning of molds and fixtures.
- Plan and execute mold trials, debug tooling issues, validate part quality, and implement corrective actions to meet program timelines.
- Integrate sensors, heaters, and control wiring into tooling; specify and verify electrical wiring and connectors used for mold instrumentation and automation.
- Apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles to reduce cycle time, scrap and tooling cost.
- Perform failure analysis and root cause investigations on tooling-related defects; implement durable fixes and preventive measures.
- Maintain tooling documentation, bills of materials, revision control, and release packages for production and service use.
- Mentor and guide junior tooling engineers and technicians, and collaborate cross-functionally to support product launches and continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline (or equivalent experience).
- Minimum 3+ years of hands-on experience in tooling and mold design for plastic parts, including mold tooling and mold design.
- Proven experience with 3D molding techniques and designing for injection or compression molding processes.
- Proficiency in Solid Works or AutoCAD for 3D modeling and 2D drawing creation.
- Practical knowledge of electrical wiring and integration for mold sensors, heaters, and automation components.
- Strong understanding of materials, heat treatment, cooling design, GD&T, and tolerancing for high-volume production.
- Experience managing external tool vendors and coordinating tool build schedules and budgets.
