Engineering Test Technician (Levels I-IV)

Job Description

This role offers the opportunity to join a growing engineering test laboratory as an Engineering Test Technician (Levels I-IV) supporting a major lab expansion. You will perform hands-on testing of HVAC and cooling systems, operate complex laboratory equipment, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in a highly technical environment. This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems, working with advanced test equipment, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality test results.

Responsibilities

+ Perform laboratory testing activities in accordance with standard procedures, test requirements, and applicable ISO standards.

+ Set up and operate complex laboratory equipment and instruments used to test HVAC and cooling systems.

+ Perform scheduled instrument verification checks and periodic facility maintenance to ensure reliable test operations.

+ Identify and report nonconformities, abnormal testing conditions, and any deviations from standard procedures.

+ Ensure adherence to standards, policies, and procedures while maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area at all times.

+ Maintain a working knowledge of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) policies and regulations to perform duties safely and promote a strong safety culture.

+ Maintain effective communication with laboratory and project teams to coordinate test activities and share test results.

+ Perform test unit setup according to laboratory procedures and specific test request requirements.

+ Create accurate records of testing activities and document results in accordance with laboratory procedures and quality requirements.

+ Support continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to improve laboratory activities, processes, and workflows.

+ Implement corrective and preventive actions to address issues identified during testing or audits.

+ Analyze, troubleshoot, and repair test units and facilities, including mechanical, electrical, and refrigerant-related components.

+ Obtain and maintain fork truck, scissor/man lift, or refrigerant handling certifications as required for lab operations.

Essential Skills

+ Hands-on experience with HVAC and cooling systems, including understanding of mechanical and refrigerant-based systems.

+ Ability to perform testing in a mechanical test lab or field service environment, following standard procedures and test requirements.

+ Proficiency in setting up and operating complex laboratory equipment and instruments.

+ Strong troubleshooting skills for mechanical, electrical, and refrigerant systems used in test units and facilities.

+ Ability to identify and report nonconformities and abnormal testing conditions with attention to detail.

+ Capability to perform scheduled instrument verification checks and basic facility maintenance.

+ Working knowledge of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) policies and regulations and the ability to apply them in daily work.

+ Strong documentation skills to create accurate records of testing activities and results in accordance with laboratory procedures.

+ Effective communication skills to collaborate with laboratory and project teams.

+ Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area while following standards, policies, and procedures.

+ Willingness and ability to obtain fork truck training/license, scissor or man lift training/license, or refrigerant handling certifications as required.

Additional

Skills & Qualifications

+ Associate's degree in HVAC&R or a closely related technical field.

+ Experience related to a mechanical test laboratory or field service environment (preferred).

+ Fork truck training/license, man lift training/license, Universal refrigerant card, or R410a refrigerant card (preferred).

+ Mentorship experience, including providing guidance and training to other technicians (preferred).

+ Experience in engineering, troubleshooting, electrical, mechanical, or refrigerant systems.

+ Interest in working with advanced cooling technologies and data center-related cooling applications.

Work Environment

This position is based in a dedicated HVAC and cooling systems research and development laboratory that is undergoing a major expansion, supported by a significant investment in R&D. The lab operates multiple shifts, with a first shift running from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and a second shift running from 2:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., Monday through Thursday, which includes a shift differential.

You will work with complex laboratory equipment, test stands, and instruments designed for mechanical and electrical testing of HVAC and cooling systems.
