Position: HVAC Mechanical Designer (HYBRID)

Mechanical Engineer (Mid-level or Senior) – Building Systems (HVAC)

Location / Work Model

· Bloomington, MN or Rochester, MN

· Hybrid: 3 days in office (local candidates or those willing to relocate)

Compensation

· Mid-level: $80,000 – $100,000 base (depending on experience)

· Senior: $100,000 – $120,000 base (depending on experience)

· Sign-on bonus: up to $10,000 (level/experience dependent)

Position Summary

This opening is for a Mechanical Engineer (Mid-level or Senior) focused on HVAC/building mechanical system design for a range of facility types. The role produces construction drawings and specifications, develops system calculations and equipment selections, supports existing building surveys, and provides construction administration support through project completion. Senior-level hires will additionally lead projects, oversee QA/QC, mentor junior engineers, and serve as a primary client contact.

Key Responsibilities

· Design HVAC mechanical systems for new construction, additions, and renovation projects based on project scope, client requirements, and applicable codes

· Develop engineering calculations and system layouts, including load calculations and energy analysis using tools such as Trace 700, IES, or comparable software

· Select and schedule mechanical equipment and develop supporting design documentation (narratives, basis of design, reports, and studies)

· Conduct existing building surveys; document existing HVAC conditions and identify integration constraints for renovation work

· Produce and coordinate construction documents, including drawings and technical specifications

· Research and apply code requirements, standards, and design guidelines to ensure compliant, buildable solutions

· Coordinate with internal disciplines and external stakeholders (architects, owners, contractors, and code officials) to resolve design issues

· Support construction administration activities such as responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, attending site visits, and addressing field conditions

· Contribute to continuous improvement of quality, documentation standards, and project delivery processes

Senior-Level Responsibilities (in addition to the above)

· Lead mechanical design efforts across multiple projects and serve as the primary point of contact for clients on mechanical scope

· Oversee QA/QC of mechanical design deliverables and ensure alignment with project requirements and firm standards

· Mentor and guide junior engineers and designers; provide technical coaching and review design work

· Support business development efforts through client relationship building, proposal input, and participation in project interviews/pursuits

Required Qualifications (Mid-level)

· Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (or closely related discipline)

· EIT (Engineer-in-Training) credential or ability to obtain

· 4+ years of hands-on building mechanical/HVAC design experience in an AEC/MEP consulting environment

· Working knowledge of HVAC systems, design workflows, and construction document production

· Proficiency with AutoCAD and standard office tools; willingness to develop Revit proficiency (training available)

· Strong communication, organization, and prioritization skills; ability to work effectively in a team environment

· Ability to travel occasionally (generally less than 10%)

Required Qualifications (Senior)

· Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (or closely related discipline)

· Professional Engineer (PE) license (preferred)

· 8+ years of building mechanical/HVAC design experience in an AEC/MEP consulting environment

· Demonstrated experience leading projects, coordinating across disciplines, and owning mechanical scope from concept through construction

· Proficiency with AutoCAD and Revit (or strong BIM adoption capability); strong documentation and QA/QC orientation

· Proven ability to mentor staff and communicate effectively with clients, contractors, and code officials

· Ability to travel occasionally (generally less than 10%)

Preferred Qualifications (Both Levels)

· LEED credential and/or sustainable design experience

· Experience in healthcare, lab/science-tech, or higher-complexity building environments

· Familiarity with energy modeling approaches and defensible code compliance documentation
