Senior Electrical Engineering Technician - Physical Substation Designer

This opportunity with Black & Veatch offers the chance to collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams within the Substation & Transmission business, supporting the design and delivery of critical electrical infrastructure that powers communities and industries today and into the future. Electrical professionals contribute to physical substation design, including equipment layouts, control house arrangements, grounding systems, raceway design, cable routing, foundation coordination, and other systems supporting high-voltage substations.

The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Senior Engineering Technician plays a key role in supporting the development of high-quality engineering 2D and 3D deliverables for complex substation infrastructure projects. Under minimal supervision, this position performs technical tasks requiring advanced knowledge of substation engineering principles and design practices, with a focus on creating and modifying physical substation design drawings and models using advanced techniques in industry-standard design tools such as Bentley Micro Station, AutoCAD, Inventor and Revit.

This role requires the ability to develop detailed engineering deliverables including substation plans, sections, elevations, equipment layouts, conduit design, grounding layouts, and construction packages. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong understanding of project budgets, schedules, and quality requirements while collaborating with engineers, designers, and project teams to deliver accurate and constructible designs.

Key responsibilities include functioning as a senior engineering technician, technical design specialist, and/or supervisor; applying advanced technical expertise to solve complex design challenges within a specific engineering discipline; contributing to the development of innovative engineering solutions; using digital tools and design software to create, modify, and maintain technical documentation, drawings, and project deliverables; providing consultation, training, and oversight to other engineering technicians to ensure quality, consistency, and compliance with project standards;

establishing and communicating appropriate design and graphic standards; reviewing project requirements to determine correct formats and deliverable content; promoting quality and consistency across projects, groups, and sections; reviewing design inputs to ensure alignment and consistency; ensuring deliverables comply with applicable codes and standards; and participating in continuous improvement of design guides, standards, and processes.

Preferred qualifications include an associate degree in drafting or an engineering design related technology, and a bachelor degree in an engineering design related technology is preferred. Minimum qualifications typically require a minimum of 11 years related work experience, and all applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements which may include criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
