- Provide on-site support for construction observation, material testing, surveying, and subsurface investigations
- Perform geotechnical field investigations, collect field samples, and log exploratory test borings
- Perform basic engineering calculations and analysis
- Develop design details and assist in designing solutions
- Monitor construction projects
- Prepare drawings, specifications, and sketches
- Assist with planning, coordinating, and executing projects
- Help ensure project milestones are met
- Provide regular updates to project managers and clients
- Communicate effectively with project team members and clients
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and clients to align technical work with project objectives
- Work on geotechnical computer modeling and fieldwork
- Ongoing enrollment in an ABET-accredited geotechnical engineering, geological engineering, or civil degree program with a geotechnical emphasis
- Coursework or research related to advanced soil mechanics
- Minimum of one full-time semester of undergraduate or graduate coursework remaining after the internship
- At least two semesters of physics
- Three semesters of mathematics
- Proficiency with Microsoft Windows OS and Microsoft Office software
- Current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
- Ability to rent a vehicle for out-of-town assignments
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future
- Willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs
- Ability to work in rough terrain, around moving machinery, and in industrial facilities, with or without reasonable accommodation
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills, including scheduling, prioritizing, and follow-up
- Ability to effectively present technical information to diverse audiences
Demonstrates proficiency in geotechnical engineering principles, including field investigations, material testing, and engineering calculations. Capable of effective communication and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to ensure project objectives are met.
