Reporting to the Operations Manager at the Hennepin County Energy Center (HCEC), the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Engineer is responsible for operations and maintenance of district heating and cooling plants, and supporting equipment and systems.
Minimum requirements to be successful in this role:
- Two (2) years of plant operations and/or maintenance experience OR technical training in a related field.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Hold a valid State of Minnesota Second Class “A” or “B” Operating Engineer’s License, and be able to obtain a State of Minnesota First Class “A” Operating Engineer’s License within two (2) years of date of employment.
- Knowledge and ability to operate plant heating and/or cooling equipment, steam turbines, pumps, and other auxiliary equipment in order to meet all customer demands for varying conditions.
- Knowledge and ability to perform routine preventative and corrective maintenance to industrial equipment such as pumps, boilers, chillers, heat exchangers, valves, and other plant or related equipment.
- Ability to interpret schematics, technical instructions and/or manuals, or other diagrams.
- Ability to collect and analyze data, troubleshoot equipment and trends, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operate heating, cooling, distribution, and related equipment in a safe, efficient manner, ensuring compliance with all pertinent regulations.
- Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on plant equipment and systems as directed to maintain reliability and continuity of plant operations.
- Perform inspections of plant equipment and systems, distribution piping, and facilities, in support of safety, regulatory compliance, and operations.
- Perform equipment isolations and lockouts to assure a high degree of personnel safety and equipment protection in support of maintenance and operations.
- Perform testing of system chemistry to ensure all steam and water systems are within normal prescribed chemistry bands.
- Complete and maintain all plant operating logs, records, maintenance documentation and other supporting paperwork as necessary.
7. Perform general house-keeping activities such as: plant cleaning, painting and preservation of equipment and facilities, waste disposal, organization of
storage of materials and others as assigned.
