Senior Accountant Position

We’re looking for a bright, hands-on accounting professional who loves variety to join our Finance Team. Your love of solving complex problems, attention to detail, and commitment to partnering with program staff and accounting skills will support programs and leadership in fulfilling our mission. This position plays a critical role on the Finance team managing period-end closing procedures such as prepare, review, reconcile and issue invoices and bills.

The Senior Accountant will work seamlessly with other departments to ensure transactions are processed accurately in accordance with specified timelines. This position is in person 4 days a week at our St. Paul location and 1 day remote.

Financial Management and Reporting
  • Maintain the general ledger and ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end closings.
  • Prepare and deliver invoices for accounts receivable, including per diem reimbursements from counties.
  • Reconcile grant-related accounts and prepare financial reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Reviews and posts all transactions into agency financial software. Oversees weekly accounts payable process; verify data entry and coding are accurate to proper grant and within budget. Maintain vendor roster and oversee vendor onboarding.
  • Maintain corporate card program and review and reconcile credit card transactions.
  • Review payroll, perform cash management, bank reconciliation, prepaid accounts, and bank deposits.
  • Track and allocate expenses related to building operations, repairs, and capital improvements
  • Analyze, prepare and issue federal 1099 reports to vendors.
Program Budgeting
  • Develop and monitor program and organizational budgets, including multi-year grant budgets.
  • Conduct variance analysis and provide recommendations to leadership.
  • Collaborate with program managers to ensure budget alignment with program goals and grant conditions
  • Track and report on federal, state, and foundation grants, ensuring compliance with all financial provisions.
  • Maintain documentation for all grants and contracts, organized by funding source.
  • Support the CFO in preparing master grant packets and updating grant tracking systems
Internal Controls & Systems
  • Design and maintain accounting workflows and internal controls.
  • Implement improvements to financial systems and reporting tools.
  • Ensure accurate cost allocation across programs and departments
Liaison with IT Consulting Group
  • Act as the primary point of contact between the finance department and IT consultants.
  • Work closely with IT consultants to ensure all IT equipment is efficient, updated, inventoried and properly allocated based on the need across the sites.
Performance Metrics
  • Accuracy and timeliness of financial reports.
  • Compliance with GAAP and regulatory standards.
  • Effective management of financial operations and risk.
  • Alignment of financial systems with program delivery.
  • Staff satisfaction and team performance.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred; and 3 years’ non-profit accounting experience. An associates degree and senior accounting experience can be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  • 3-5 years of senior accounting in a non-profit organization required.
  • A clear understanding of GAAP and demonstrated accounting knowledge
  • Experience with and knowledge of computerized accounting systems
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
