About the Role
The Minneapolis Police Department is recruiting Police Cadet candidates who demonstrate commitment to public service, strong character, sound judgment, excellent work ethic, effective communication skills, interpersonal tact, empathy, and compassion. Candidates will attend a law‑enforcement program and, upon successful completion, be promoted to Police Officer.

4119 DuPont Ave North, Minneapolis. Topics: application process, educational requirements, background investigation, interview expectations, medical/psychological/physical testing, and peace‑officer licensing standards.
- Attend and complete a law‑enforcement program at a department‑authorized institution to meet the academic objectives required for the Minnesota P.O.S.T. licensing examination.
- Upon hire, be promoted to Police Officer after successful completion of the Minnesota P.O.S.T. Board academic and skill requirements when an academy class is scheduled.
- Commit to two years of employment with the Minneapolis Police Department after promotion, or repay a prorated portion of tuition costs paid by the department. Dismissal results in forgiveness of outstanding costs.
- Failure to pass the Minnesota P.O.S.T. licensing exam at the end of training may result in termination.
- Participate in background investigation, drug and alcohol screening, medical and psychological exams, and fitness testing during the academy.
- Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university completed by the Cadet Academy start date.
- Authorized to work in the United States.
- No felony convictions.
- Successful completion of a Minneapolis Police Department background investigation.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States.
- Must not have a felony conviction.
- Must successfully pass the MPD background investigation.

- A thorough criminal background check is required. Applicants must consent to obtain their criminal history.
- All applicants must pass a pre‑employment drug and alcohol test prior to hire.
- Candidates must be medically and psychologically fit and successfully pass a drug and alcohol screening prior to hire.
- Pre‑employment medical and psychological exams, including work‑simulation tests, will be scheduled after background clearance.
- Must stand, walk, sit, talk, hear, use hands, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach with hands and arms.
- Lift up to 25 pounds.
- Maintain close‑distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- Meet MPD Police Officer fitness goals during the academy.
Candidates who do not complete any portion of the process are ineligible to advance.

- Relate and work effectively with people from diverse cultures, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
- Physical ability to run, chase, wrestle, subdue suspects, jump, crawl, lift, and drag heavy objects.
- Proficiency in any of the following second languages is desired:
Spanish, Somali, Hmong, Laotian, Amharic, Oromo, Vietnamese, American Sign Language (ASL).
