Job Summary
Coordinates and provides support services for the Police Department. Ensures efficient and effective services consistent with the mission and goals of the department; achieved by managing the property and evidence room as well as hiring, training and providing work direction to a team of community service officers.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesManage property and evidence
- Ensure that all items are always accounted for.
- Maintain the security of the property and evidence storages areas and ensure only authorized persons are allowed in those areas.
- Maintain logs of entry into the storage areas.
- Assist in the development of policies and procedures for handling, storing, and purging property and evidence.
- Arrange for the transport and processing of evidence.
- Make appointments and meet with property owners to return property.
- Organize evidence packaging materials and order as needed.
Coordinates and supervises the daily duties and activities of the CSOs and Cadets
- Establishes and coordinates monthly work schedules.
- Administers training programs and provides work direction to staff.
- Responds to calls for assistance on code violations, enforces parking ordinances and assists public when needed.
- Coordinates all animal control activities.
- Responds to animal complaints, issues citations and licenses, apprehends and detains and collects applicable fees and fines.
- Responsible for the purchase and acquisition of department supplies and materials.
- Coordinates and assists with the care and maintenance of department vehicles and equipment.
- Coordinates all department tours.
- Coordinates fingerprint appointments.
- Coordinates the operation of the vehicle speed monitoring systems.
- Assist with the holding facility.
- Writes clear and complete police reports in accordance with department policy.
- Performs the duties of CSO or Cadet as required.
- Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as directed by department personnel.
Collaborate with others
- Keep supervisor, patrol, and other city departments informed of current standards and practices to ensure that we are following state and federal laws and standards required for prosecution.
- Attend trainings and meetings with other area property and evidence specialists to stay up to date on the most current trends for this specialty.
- Communicate with prosecutors and lab technicians to ensure we are handing property properly.
Other/general administration
- Provide customer service in a professional, courteous, and helpful manner.
- Keep supervisor informed of assignments, issues, and concerns as they arise.
- Work in a team environment, providing service and support to internal and external customers.
- Perform work duties both in the office and in the field.
- Perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.
- Two years of post-secondary education or equivalence and two years' related experience in law enforcement; or equivalent combination of education and job experience.
- Valid driver's license, or ability to obtain upon hire.
- Experience supervising, mentoring and providing work related feedback to front line employees.
- Computer proficiency and intermediate skills with Microsoft office applications.
- Ability to:
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with people from all cultures and backgrounds.
- Establish and maintain a good working relationship with colleagues and the general public.
- Collect, interpret, enter and analyze data in an efficient and accurate manner.
- Organize, plan and manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
- Bachelor's degree
- Experience working in a property room
- Two (2) years' experience as Community Service Officer/Cadet/Police Reserve Officer
