Lorenz Clinic of Family Psychology
Lorenz Clinic is a family psychology and relational mental health organization committed to restoring wholeness in individuals, families, and systems. We approach clinical care, training, and leadership through a systemic, developmental lens—and we treat practicum as a core institutional responsibility, not a peripheral training requirement.
Our practicum programs are designed to form psychotherapists
, not simply place students.

Formation-Focused Training at Lorenz
At Lorenz Clinic, psychotherapy training emphasizes:
- relational and systemic thinking
- developmental understanding of symptoms and change
- reflective practice and ethical judgment
- moving beyond “what” is happening to why it makes sense in context
Supervision is developmental and reflective, with the explicit goal of helping students learn how to think as clinicians
, not just how to perform clinical tasks.
Many of our practicum students go on to apply for post-graduate roles at Lorenz Clinic, including our Post-Master’s Fellowship, making this practicum an important early step in a longer professional pathway.
Key Responsibilities- Provide in-person psychotherapy services under supervision, including diagnostic assessments, treatment planning, ongoing psychotherapy, and discharge planning
- Maintain an in-person psychotherapy caseload appropriate to training level
- Provide crisis assistance as needed, under supervision
- Participate in individual and group supervision, case consultation, Grand Rounds, and required clinic meetings (as schedules permit)
- Complete clinical documentation in compliance with DHS, insurance, and clinic standards

- Maintain professionalism in all interactions with clients, families, staff, and partners
- Accurately complete required billing and documentation tasks with support and supervision

This practicum is a strong fit for students who:
- are enrolled in a master’s program in Counseling, Marriage & Family Therapy, Social Work, Early Childhood / Infant Mental Health, or a related field
- are interested in relational, systemic, and developmental models of psychotherapy
- are ready to engage deeply in supervision and reflective practice
- value formation, coherence, and ethical clarity over speed or volume
- have completed (or are close to completing) the majority of academic coursework
In our experience, the educational quality of a practicum is negatively correlated with excessive concurrent academic load. Students are encouraged to begin practicum after completing most degree requirements.
