Job Overview

Fairview Health Services, operating under the University of Minnesota Medical Center East Bank, is hiring an Instrument Technician to support the Operating Room with sterilization and instrument management.

Position Details

• 0.8 FTE (64 hours per two week pay period)

• Day shift: 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM

• Days:
Monday, Tuesday, Saturday, Sunday

• All hires must complete a 12‑week orientation following hire.

Candidates must be able to commit to working a full‑time day shift position for 12 weeks following hire.

Job Expectations
  • Decontaminate, clean, process, assemble, sterilize, store, and distribute reusable surgical instruments and medical devices.
  • Inspect, test, assemble, package, and label instruments prior to sterilization.
  • Operate automated and non‑automated processing equipment such as washers, sterilizers, incubators, heat sealers.
  • Prepare instrument carts, intraoperative supply picking, and high‑level disinfection of flexible endoscopes and other semi‑critical devices as required.
  • Provide a resource to physicians, nurses, and other clinical staff regarding instrument availability and supply.
  • Follow manufacturers’ written instructions, system policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain knowledge of and comply with relevant laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Adjust communication and service approach to reflect the developmental level and cultural differences of the populations served.
Qualifications
  • Required: 6 months experience in an operating room, medical device reprocessing role, or completion of an approved Fairview Sterile Processing training program.
  • Preferred Education: Graduate of a Central Service program, Accredited Surgical Technologist program, or Licensed Practical Nurse program.
  • Preferred Experience: Two years as a Sterile Processing Technician, Surgical Technologist, or in a medical device reprocessing role.
  • Certification: Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification.
