Clinical Mass Spectrometry Technologist

The Clinical Mass Spectrometry Technologist performs complex analyses on blood, tissue, and body fluids to support health care providers in diagnosing, monitoring, and treating patients. Testing is conducted in specialized laboratories using highly skilled manual techniques and advanced automated instrumentation, with a primary focus on HPLC, LC/MS/MS, and GC/MS. The technologist operates and maintains sophisticated instruments, troubleshoots assays, evaluates test accuracy, assists in interpreting results, and provides operational support to optimize testing workflows.

This role requires strict adherence to safety protocols when working with infectious specimens, chemicals, and other laboratory hazards, and involves using multiple computer systems to retrieve information and report results.

Responsibilities
  • Perform analytical testing on blood, tissue, and body fluids in a specialized clinical laboratory setting to aid in patient diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment.
  • Operate, maintain, and optimize sophisticated laboratory instrumentation, with primary use of HPLC, LC/MS/MS, and GC/MS systems.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation issues and assay systems to ensure continuous, reliable, and accurate test performance.
  • Evaluate tests for accuracy and validity, including reviewing quality control data and resolving discrepancies.
  • Assist with interpreting laboratory results in collaboration with health care providers and laboratory leadership when appropriate.
  • Use multiple computer systems to retrieve patient and specimen information, enter data, and accurately report test results.
  • Perform highly skilled manual techniques and automated testing procedures according to established laboratory protocols and standard operating procedures.
  • Provide operational support activities to optimize testing processes, including workflow coordination, reagent management, and instrument readiness.
  • Strictly adhere to safety protocols and regulatory guidelines when working with infectious specimens, chemicals, and other potential hazards.
  • Follow laboratory quality control and quality assurance practices to maintain high standards of testing performance.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues and other laboratory staff, demonstrating effective communication and teamwork.
  • Work with minimal supervision while maintaining accountability for the quality and timeliness of testing.
  • Assist with specimen collection as needed, ensuring proper handling, labeling, and processing.
  • Manage multiple tasks simultaneously and produce accurate results under time constraints in a fast-paced and changing environment.
  • Accommodate scheduling adjustments and participate in off-shift, holiday, on-call, and weekend work assignments as required.
  • Engage in career development opportunities within established pathways such as instrumentation technical specialist, quality assurance, management, or education.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a human biological science is required, such as Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Animal Science, Marine Biology, or Neuroscience.
  • Chemistry or Biochemistry degree is preferred for this role.
  • Experience working with laboratory instrumentation such as GC, LC, HPLC, and MS is preferred.
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot complex laboratory instruments and assay systems.
  • Capability to produce accurate and reliable results under time constraints and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong multi-tasking skills with the ability to manage several tests and tasks simultaneously.
  • Effective communication skills to work closely and collaboratively with other laboratory professionals.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of performance and accountability.
  • Strict adherence to safety protocols when handling infectious specimens, chemicals, and other hazards.
  • Comfort using multiple computer systems for data retrieval, test ordering, and result reporting.
Additional

Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with laboratory practices in a college, research, or clinical setting is a plus but not required.
  • Master's degree in a relevant field is acceptable; doctoral (PhD) degrees are not required for this position.
  • Background or coursework in medical laboratory testing, chemistry, biochemistry, and quality control is beneficial.
  • Interest in and aptitude for instrumentation experience and troubleshooting.
