Peace House Community (PHC) nourishes its members’ bodies and souls by providing a safe space for everyone. PHC enriches the lives of its members, volunteers and students by offering a place to belong for everyone who comes through its doors.

Vision Statement

Community members who have been wounded by economic and social dislocation will be healed through caring relationships in a supportive community.

Guiding Principles
  • Respect the uniqueness of others’ spiritual paths.
  • Ensure all voices are heard; respect the diversity of opinions.
  • Listen with an open mind to the thoughts of others and have the wisdom to learn from all.
  • Practice non-violence through self-restraint, encouraging words, compassionate actions and respectful listening.
  • Remain calm while others around us may be agitated and irritable.
  • Accept difficult situations with grace and serenity as we work towards conflict resolution.
  • Utilize patience and maturity to hear all ideas and come to a responsible conclusion or decision.

Peace House Community strives to offer a non-violent, welcoming and inclusive community for poor and marginalized women and men who are seeking companionship, safety from the streets and personal affirmation.

Peace House Community provides a platform for expressing beliefs, hurts, desperation, hopes and fears too long hidden in so many bruised and broken hearts. Community members are affirmed through mutual sharing, respectful listening and appreciation of each person’s value and worth. PHC offers:

  • A safe place for street people to find respite during the day.
  • A daily 45-minute meditation, an open dialogue in which community members are encouraged to participate in the topic selected for the day.
  • Most importantly, a place where people are heard, a place where they can express their cares and concerns without being judged.
Requirements

  • Ability to create a welcoming environment.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful interpersonal interactions.
  • Ability to diffuse tense situations and de-escalate aggressive or upset individuals.
  • Ability to work with a variety of personality types and personality quirks.
  • Ability to represent PHC in a professional manner.
  • Must pass a Department of Human Services background check to work with vulnerable populations.
  • Degree or diploma in social work, counseling, or similar field, or equivalent life experience.
  • Training in trauma informed care, motivational interviewing, de-escalation, and similar areas preferred.
Job Duties include
  • Welcoming community members to the facility.
  • Get to know individual community member needs and help them find resources to meet those needs.
  • Assisting the Program Manager in resolving conflicts among community members.
  • Intervening in incidents that threaten the peace of the community.
  • Helping those new to PHC assimilate into the community.
  • Ensuring volunteers have a pleasant experience and feel valued.
  • Representing PHC appropriately to the neighborhood and larger community.
  • Assisting community members in abiding by community and meditation guidelines.
  • Appropriately documenting any incidents that volunteers, staff or the Board should know about.
  • Opening and closing the facility each day.
  • Assisting other staff as needed with other aspects of PHC operations (e.g. clearing snow, clean up, kitchen help, etc.).
  • Other duties as assigned.
