Position Summary:
The Human Resources Generalist provides comprehensive human resources administrative and front office support for a growing special education charter school serving approximately 200 employees. This position assists with day-to-day HR operations, employee onboarding and offboarding, benefits administration, personnel records, compliance requirements, and recruitment activities while also assisting with school-wide administrative functions and front desk oversight. The position serves as a key resource for employees, applicants, families, and visitors and helps ensure efficient and professional school operations.
- Assist with recruitment activities, including posting vacancies, screening applications, scheduling interviews, and facilitating hiring processes.
- Assist with employee onboarding, orientation, and new hire paperwork.
- Assist with employee separations, non-renewals, and offboarding requirements.
- Maintain personnel files and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws.
- Administer employee benefits, including health insurance, dental insurance, COBRA, leave programs, and open enrollment.
- Assist with leave requests, including FMLA, ADA accommodations, workers' compensation, and other protected leaves.
- Assist with payroll processing and maintain employee data in payroll and HRIS systems.
- Track employee licensure, certifications, required trainings, and background studies.
- Assist in employee handbooks, policies, and HR forms.
- Assist supervisors with performance management documentation and employee relations matters.
- Assist with employment verification requests and other employment-related correspondence.
- Generate HR reports and maintain confidential employee information.
- Ensure compliance with Minnesota Department of Education requirements, charter school policies, and employment regulations.
- Monitor mandatory training and staff compliance requirements.
- Assist with annual audits and compliance reviews.
- Maintain accurate personnel records and retention schedules.
- Support implementation of workplace safety and risk management programs.
- Serve as a backup for front desk coverage and reception functions.
- Greet visitors, families, students, vendors, and community partners in a professional manner.
- Answer and direct phone calls, emails, and general inquiries.
- Support building access procedures and visitor management protocols.
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration, Education, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Three or more years of progressively responsible HR or administrative experience.
- Knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices.
- Strong organizational, data entry, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in data management and recordkeeping systems.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Proficiency with Google Workspace, Apple IWork, mail merge, and HR/payroll software systems.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong customer service orientation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to establish positive working relationships with employees, families, and community members.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, and perform office-related tasks for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment.
