About the Job
The Mouse Behavior Core at the University of Minnesota provides technical research support at our core facilities as well as on-site laboratory assistance. We are an internal sales organization supported by the Department of Neuroscience and the Institute for Translational Neuroscience. Our primary goal is to provide training and technical assistance for conducting behavioral testing. This includes multiple assays used to assess various aspects of sensory, motor, affective, motivational, and cognitive function.
This work supports a wide variety of preclinical research labs interested in better understanding genetic and neural mechanisms involved in normal brain function and dysfunction. Research-related interests include addiction, neurodevelopmental disorders, neurodegenerative disorders, psychiatric disorders, metabolic disorders, pain- and stress-related disorders, traumatic brain injury, age-related cognitive impairment, and cancer.
In addition to behavior testing, our other services include assisting in mouse transgenic colony maintenance, conducting select surgical services, and advanced data processing and analysis. We also work to develop new testing options and approaches to maximize our ability to support the research community. This includes collaboration with the MnDRIVE Optogenetics Core to comprehensively integrate optogenetic and photometry approaches with our behavioral testing options.
45% - Conduct assigned behavioral testing and assessment in mice. Maintain laboratory notebook and assist with data processing.
45% - Assist with maintenance of transgenic mouse colonies including help with weaning, genotyping, tissue processing, and database maintenance.
10% - Perform routine maintenance of laboratory spaces and equipment. Assist with development of core hardware/software.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in psychology, neuroscience, or other related field or a combo of education and work experience to equal 4 years. Prior experience handling and working with animals.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with rodent behavior testing and/or transgenic mouse colony maintenance. Coding experience (e.g., Python) or experience with Excel, Any Maze, Med Associates, or related software. Ability to work independently, openness to flexible schedules including some potential weekend/holiday work, and ability to travel across different buildings across East Bank side of campus as needed.

Pay and Benefits
Pay Range: $21.64 - $26.44 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience
