Position Description
Facilitate educational and social communication between deaf/hard of hearing students, their hearing peers, and staff members. Provide ASL interpretation of verbal and written information in educational settings. Participate as a member of the educational team serving these students. Ensure student access to and understanding of curriculum. This support may be provided in the general education classroom, special education classroom or community
Qualifications
- AAS Degree in Interpretation and Transliteration
- Experience as an interpreter in a variety of situations involving the deaf and hard of hearing.
Education
To qualify as a sign language interpreter/transl iterator, a person shall have completed a training program affiliated with a state accredited educational institution and hold:
- An interpreter and/or transl iterator certification awarded by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID); or
- A general level proficiency certificate at level 3 awarded by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD); or
- Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) at the 4.0 level.
To qualify as a cued speech transl iterator, a person shall hold a current applicable transl iterator certificate awarded by Testing, Evaluation and Verification Unit, Inc. (TECUnit).
- Must be flexible and willing to work in a variety of settings with a variety of students and staff.
- May need to lift, pull and move a minimum of 50 pounds.
- Must be willing to assist in the eating and toileting needs of students.
- Must maintain data privacy and confidentiality for all students.
- Computer skills preferred.
