About the RoleWe are recruiting on behalf of a privately held investment and management group that oversees a portfolio small to mid‑sized operating companies across multiple industries, including manufacturing, consumer services, and food production. This role functions as a senior business leader—often acting as a Chief of Staff or Director of Operations—with a strong accounting foundation. The position combines hands‑on financial leadership with operational oversight, people management, and project‑based business improvement initiatives across multiple entities.
Job DescriptionThe Controller / Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing day‑to‑day business operations while providing strategic financial leadership across several portfolio businesses. Approximately 60% of the role focuses on Controller‑level accounting and financial management, with the remaining 40% dedicated to operational leadership, process improvement, and organizational support.
Key Responsibilities- Overseeing all accounting functions, including month‑end and year‑end close, general ledger management, reconciliations, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll
- Preparing, reviewing, and presenting financial statements, management reports, budgets, forecasts, and long‑term financial models
- Monitoring cash flow, working capital, and liquidity while ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely financial reporting
- Ensuring compliance with GAAP, maintaining internal controls, and coordinating with external auditors and tax advisors
- Analyzing financial and operational data to identify risks, trends, and opportunities and making recommendations to leadership
- Managing day‑to‑day business operations across multiple small to mid‑sized companies to improve efficiency, scalability, and cost control
- Leading and developing staff while supporting cross‑functional teams, including sales, HR, IT, and external partners
- Driving project management initiatives, business reorganizations, and process improvements to address operational challenges and “put out fires” as they arise
- Supporting vendor management, contract administration, procurement, and operational KPI development
- Assisting executive leadership with strategic planning, business analysis, and operational reporting
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
- 5+ years of progressive experience in accounting, finance, or operations, including Controller‑level or senior accounting responsibilities
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management
- Experience managing people and leading teams in small to mid‑sized business environments
- Hands‑on experience with accounting systems and financial reporting tools such as Quick Books, Net Suite, Sage, or similar platforms
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, solve complex problems, and balance strategic planning with hands‑on execution
- Strong communication, leadership, organizational, and cross‑functional collaboration skills
- Experience supporting multiple business entities or portfolio companies within an investment or holding company structure
- Background in operations leadership, project management, or business transformation initiatives
- Prior experience in manufacturing, consumer services, food production, or similar operationally driven industries
- Experience serving in a Chief of Staff, Director of Operations, or hybrid finance/operations leadership role
