Summary of Position

Under the general direction of the Fire Chief, the Assistant Chief of Training & Professional Standards provides leadership for the department's training, professional development, operational readiness, and organizational standards. As a member of the Command Staff, this position develops and administers comprehensive training programs for career personnel, oversees officer development, promotes operational excellence, responds to emergency incidents, and assists in the overall management of the Fire Department.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $61.33 - $76.41/Hour

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the department's annual training and professional development program.
  • Coordinate all internal and external training for career firefighters.
  • Maintain all department training records and ensure compliance with state and departmental requirements.
  • Develop lesson plans, practical evolutions, annual training calendars, and instructor assignments.
  • Provide classroom and hands-on instruction as needed.
  • Lead probationary firefighter training, officer development, mentoring, and succession planning.
  • Coordinate after-action reviews, significant incident debriefings, and implement operational improvements.
  • Develop, review, and maintain departmental policies, procedures, and Standard Operating Guidelines.
  • Assist with strategic planning, accreditation efforts, and organizational initiatives.
  • Respond as a Command Officer to emergency incidents.
  • Assist with preparation and administration of departmental operating and training budgets. Assigns duties to employees under his/her command.
  • Supervise assigned personnel through coaching, performance management, and leadership development.
  • Represent the department at regional meetings, committees, and community events.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with City staff, partner agencies, elected officials, and the public.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Fire Chief.
  • Makes recommendations to the Fire Chief relating to the hiring, transfer, suspension, promotion, discharge, assignment, reward or discipline of subordinates.
  • Supervises and directs pre-fire planning used for high value commercial and large occupancy load buildings.
  • Follows oral and written instructions such as supervisor’s work orders and equipment operation manuals.
  • Regular and reliable attendance during scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary.
  • Provides effective and respectful communication and interactions with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and citizens.
