Job DescriptionThe Lab Technician supports laboratory operations by preparing samples, operating equipment, and accurately measuring and recording test results. This role involves working with paints and coatings, performing batch making and panel testing, and ensuring all activities follow established safety and work instructions. The Lab Technician contributes directly to product quality and development by maintaining precise records, supporting complex application techniques, and keeping the laboratory organized and efficient.
Responsibilities- Perform laboratory work that includes accurately measuring materials using scales, weighing and pouring materials, and following detailed work instructions.
- Operate laboratory equipment and somewhat complex instruments in accordance with safety procedures and standard operating instructions.
- Prepare batches and samples for testing, including making paint samples using designated equipment.
- Spray or apply coatings to small test panels while following specified methods and application techniques.
- Measure and document properties of wet paint samples and coated panels, ensuring all readings are accurate and reliable.
- Accurately record results and observations related to batch making, sample preparation, and panel testing in laboratory records and reports.
- Assist in the application lab with more complex application techniques under guidance, supporting ongoing projects and experiments.
- Communicate test results, observations, and relevant information clearly and promptly to the project leader or designated team members.
- Complete routine paperwork for ordering chemical samples, formula samples, and other laboratory-related materials.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area by following housekeeping standards and laboratory safety guidelines.
- Demonstrated experience working in a laboratory environment, including hands‑on lab work and sample preparation.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to measure accurately using scales and other measuring devices.
- Ability to operate laboratory and application equipment, including tools used for making paint samples and applying coatings.
- Good reading, testing, and observational skills to follow written instructions and accurately interpret test results.
- Effective communication skills to share information and findings with project leaders and team members.
- Understanding of basic chemistry principles as they relate to paints, coatings, and laboratory testing.
- Quality control mindset with a focus on accuracy, consistency, and adherence to procedures.
- Ability to work efficiently, manage tasks, and follow safety and work instructions consistently.
- Completion of a 2‑year degree or, alternatively, at least 2 years of laboratory experience without a formal degree.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working with paints, coatings, or similar materials in a laboratory or production environment.
- Familiarity with panel testing and measuring physical properties of wet and dry coatings.
- Comfort with routine documentation, paperwork, and ordering of chemical and formula samples.
- Strong organizational skills to maintain clear records and a well‑ordered workspace.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with application lab staff and support more complex application techniques.
The Lab Technician works in a laboratory and application lab environment focused on paints and coatings. This is a Contract position based out of Minneapolis, MN.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
