Shear Operator / Maintenance Tech
Department: Pressroom
Position Type: Hourly / Full Time / In-Person
Pay Rate: $19–$23/hour DOE
Schedule: 6:00am – 4:30pm Monday–Thursday
Job DescriptionThe Shear Operator / Maintenance Tech is responsible for safely operating metal shearing equipment to cut sheet metal to specified dimensions for production. This role also includes basic preventative maintenance, material handling, production support, and assisting with general shop and facility maintenance. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-focused, mechanically inclined, and flexible in supporting other production tasks as needed.
Key Responsibilities- Operate metal shearing equipment to cut sheet metal to specifications
- Read and interpret job orders, cut lists, and work instructions
- Safely handle and move large metal sheets using proper equipment and techniques
- Inspect materials and finished cuts to ensure quality standards are met
- Enter production and material usage data into computer systems
- Follow all workplace safety procedures and PPE requirements
- Perform basic preventative maintenance including cleaning, oiling, and inspections
- Follow lockout/tagout procedures during maintenance or jam clearing
- Assist with machine, building, and grounds maintenance
- Support other production tasks when workload is light
- Maintain a clean and organized work area
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers
- Previous shearing or metal fabrication experience preferred
- Mechanical aptitude or maintenance experience preferred
- Strong commitment to workplace safety
- Basic computer and data entry skills
- Strong attention to detail and quality
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently or on a team
- Good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability to stand and move throughout the shift
- Ability to safely lift and maneuver heavy sheet metal
- Comfortable working around sharp materials and moving machinery
- Ability to perform repetitive motions in a manufacturing environment
