The Toolmaker is a full-time, on-site role based in Minneapolis, MN, responsible for building, maintaining, and repairing injection molds and related tooling. Day-to-day work includes reading and interpreting engineering drawings, setting up and operating manual and CNC machines, and fabricating, fitting, and assembling components to precise specifications. The Toolmaker will perform troubleshooting on tools used in production, identify root causes of defects or tooling issues, and implement corrective actions to support efficient manufacturing.
The role also involves collaborating with engineers and production teams on Design for Manufacturability, documenting work performed, and following company safety, quality, and ISO 9001 procedures. This position requires hands-on work in a clean, fast-paced shop environment with a focus on accuracy, reliability, and continuous improvement.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, CAD models, and technical specifications.
- Set up and operate manual and CNC machines, including mills, lathes, grinders, and EDM equipment.
- Fabricate, fit, and assemble components to precise specifications for injection molds and related tooling.
- Troubleshoot tooling used in production, identify root causes of defects or tooling issues, and implement corrective actions to improve efficiency, quality, and uptime.
- Collaborate with engineers and production teams on Design for Manufacturability (DFM) concepts.
- Document work performed and follow company safety, quality, and ISO 9001 procedures.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop environment and focus on accuracy, reliability, and continuous improvement.
- Strong skills in toolmaking, including precision machining, mold building, and tool repair for thermoplastic injection molding.
- Proficiency operating manual and CNC equipment such as mills, lathes, grinders, and EDM machines, with accurate measurement using calipers, micrometers, and gauges.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, CAD models, and technical specifications, applying Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles.
- Experience with troubleshooting tooling and production issues, root-cause analysis, and implementing practical corrective actions to improve quality and uptime.
- Working knowledge of manufacturing quality standards (preferably ISO 9001) and familiarity with ERP or shop-floor data systems.
- Relevant technical training or apprenticeship in toolmaking, mold making, machining, or a related trade; vocational or associate degree in a technical field is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail, ability to work safely and independently, and effective collaboration with engineers, production staff, and quality personnel.
- Prior experience in plastics injection molding or a similar manufacturing environment is highly beneficial.
