THE OPPORTUNITY:

The Food Systems Manager will provide management and support to a team of food systems professionals across agency locations. This role is responsible for ensuring increased access to high-quality, culturally appropriate and nutritious foods, expand community outreach and partnerships building to mobilize resources, and drive strategies that address access to healthy foods. The goal of this department is to remove barriers to healthy food access, promote wellness, reduce disparities, and expand food related programs by using place-based, community-centered approaches.

This includes, but is not limited to, food shelves, community meals, and urban agriculture/farming/community gardens. The Manager will also be responsible to ensure contract compliances are met, data collection and reporting are completed in a timely manner, guide staff development, manage program administration, and contribute to system-level change efforts that promote food access and healthy eating.

THE ROLE (Essential Functions)

The Food Systems Manager will demonstrate strong leadership in program design, service delivery, supervision, program strategy, and partnership development.

Key responsibilities include:

Program Leadership & Management
  • Supervise, coach, and support Food Systems staff, interns and volunteers.
  • Set program goals, monitor progress, and ensure alignment with organizational mission and funder expectations.
  • Design, implement and assess the effectiveness of food access promotion and nutrition education initiatives.
  • Develop outreach strategies to engage diverse communities and educate about nutrition and healthy eating practices.
  • Manage program evaluation efforts, analyze outcomes, and use data to strengthen program impact.
  • Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly and annual reports to funders, partners, and agency leadership.
Financial Management
  • Responsible for financial management and oversight of program and departmental budgets including developing, monitoring, and revising departmental budgets.
  • Work closely with Senior Director of Community Development and Finance department to effectively manage contracts and budget revisions as necessary, including invoicing and billing process (e.g., submitting monthly/quarterly invoices in a timely manner) and coordinating external financial audits required by funders.
  • Support maximization of resources across food systems including monitoring spending, securing donations, leveraging volunteers and supporting the development of proposals to funders.
Community Engagement & Partnerships
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with partners such as 2nd Harvest Heartland, Food Groups, Local Growers, Grocery stores, other food shelves across metro areas.
  • Expand collaborative partnerships to increase resources, services, and program visibility.
  • Serve as a representative of PUC at food access events, coalitions, and partner tables.
Staff Development & Team Support
  • Responsible for leading and managing a team and providing ongoing staff supervision, including performance management, providing opportunities for growth and development as well as accountability to staff in each location and must therefore be an effective supervisor, and encouraging leader.
  • This position will also work closely with internal and external stakeholders; therefore, skilled communication and high-level strategic thinking are essential for the success of this position.
  • Help recruit, onboard, and train new food system staff, interns and volunteers.
  • Foster a collaborative and supportive team environment with high standards of accountability and innovation.
