Temporary for a period of up to six months (non‑benefit eligible).

The On‑Call Public Health Nurse reports to the Disease Prevention and Control (DPC) Supervisor who, with a team of PHNs, assists in immunization clinics serving children and adults. This position also may assist with communicable disease investigations and reporting following the infectious disease guidelines developed by the Minnesota Department of Health and the CDC. This position provides support in lead roles during immunization clinics.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • One year of professional nursing experience that included working with communicable diseases and/or immunizations in public health, school, or community‑based settings, hospital or clinic facilities
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in Minnesota
  • Current registration as a Public Health Nurse in Minnesota or qualifications to register and ability to obtain before start date
  • Valid Driver's License
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to speak, read, and/or write in a secondary language (e.g., Somali, Spanish)
  • Experience working with Refugee and Immigrant populations
  • Experience working with people with Tuberculosis disease or infection
  • Experience in working with clinics, schools, and other community sites on communicable disease investigations
  • Master's Degree in Nursing
  • One or more years of experience as a Public Health Nurse
  • Experience with immunization clinics and vaccine schedules
  • Use of computerized medical charting systems (particularly MIIC, Ph-Doc, and MEDSS)
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Knowledge of the public health system
  • Knowledge of the principles of communicable disease prevention and control
  • Working knowledge of public health nursing services
  • Knowledge of emergency preparedness systems, plans and procedures
  • Strong nursing assessment and planning skills
  • Strong verbal communication skills especially in dealing with other health professionals and the public
  • Demonstrated skill in effective interpersonal relationships and ability to work with others as a team member
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Ability to work and learn with electronic systems used to document DPC cases
  • Able to be flexible and adapt to surge capacity for both DPC and Emergency Preparedness
WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed within a County office building, at community sites, and client home visits. Travel is required. Exposure to potential hazardous physical conditions such as environmental conditions of unsanitary homes and property, unsafe neighborhoods, challenging clients and family members, pets, and animals; exposure to hazardous materials such as blood, and other body fluids; lifting requirement of up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis.

Equipment used may include, but is not limited to, computer, tablet, printer, phone, cell phone, copy and fax machines, video camera, nursing supplies and equipment including scales, syringes, hazardous waste, N95 respirators, blood pressure equipment and car seats.

IMMUNIZATION AND DISEASE INVESTIGATION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide immunization services to targeted populations at DCPH clinics and other community sites.
  • Assist with communicable disease investigations as needed; acting as a resource for disease prevention information.
  • Perform public health emergency response functions as trained and assigned within the department's emergency response plan.
  • Complete forms and documents in accordance with department policies and procedures and professional standards.
