Research Pro 3 - Environmental and Natural Sciences position at the University of Minnesota. This 10‑week position, starting March
152026, may be extended depending on funding and performance. The position is located in the Forestry Sciences Laboratory in Grand Rapids, MN.
We seek an broadly trained researcher with entomological knowledge to examine disturbance and climate change effects on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The applicant will independently conduct fieldwork in rugged terrain and laboratory work in Grand Rapids, including the identification of larvae and adult insects to the genus level and plants to the species level.
Essential Functions- Fieldwork (70%) – Independently conduct habitat surveys, collect samples, measure water and sediment characteristics, and identify aquatic and terrestrial insects.
- Laboratory (15%) – Identify insects and invertebrates using microscopy and taxonomic keys, process organic matter samples, and run water chemistry analyses.
- Data Analysis and Presentations (10%) – Enter data into spreadsheets, maintain large data sets, analyze complex data, and assist with presentations and publications.
- Lab Management (5%) – Conduct routine lab maintenance and safety inspections.
- B.S. degree in Entomology (or related field) with coursework in aquatic entomology, insect taxonomy, wetland ecology, limnology, statistics, chemistry, and mathematics.
- At least 4 years of documented research experience in entomological field and laboratory work, or a combination of education and experience equal to 8 years.
- Demonstrated ability to use microscopy, dichotomous keys, and to conduct field sampling and lab analyses independently.
- Proficiency with spreadsheets, word‑processing, and presentation software.
- Valid state‑issued driver’s license and safe driving record.
- Capacity to undertake overnight rural field trips up to 4days and to work in remote areas with challenging terrain and weather.
- Physical capability to hike long distances carrying equipment, routinely lift or carry 50pounds, and adapt to changing research priorities.
- Commitment to safety protocols and respectful collaborative work.
Hourly rate: $28–$30, depending on education, qualifications, and experience. Retirement plan options are available for civil‑service, faculty, labor‑represented, professional & administrative, and temp‑casual classifications.
