    Tuesday through Saturday between 9am-5pm
  • About 900 total project hours over 10 months
  • Position may be filled by one or two employees depending on availability
Summary:

Hennepin History Museum is seeking a Collections Assistant to catalog, photograph,, rehouse, research, and manage data records for our American Indian Collection of 3 D objects. This position will work closely with museum staff and cultural advisors on a comprehensive review of this collection as part of a larger project funded through the Minnesota Humanities Center.

Main Responsibilities
  • Object cataloging and identification, with a focus on tribal affiliation, use, and cultural significance.
  • Object photography and file management.
  • Accession records reconciliation to establish provenance and general research to establish historical significance.
  • Data management:
    Input data into digital spreadsheets and databases; organization of hard copies of records.
  • Handling fragile sensitive objects and building support materials for rehousing.
  • General collections and records management tasks as assigned.
  • Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Considerable knowledge of local American Indian history and culture.
    • Experience working with American Indian communities.
    • Access to relevant American Indian cultural resources.
    • Considerable knowledge of general philosophy, principles, and practices of history museums, particularly regional and locally focused museums.
    • Considerable research skills, particularly in-depth historical inquiries, archival research, and provenance discovery.
    • Attention to detail.
    • Ability to operate independently.
    • Ability to use a DSLR camera.
    • Ability to utilize both physical and digital records.
    • Familiarity with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
    Desired Qualifications
    • BA or equivalent in History, Art History, Public History, American Indian Studies, Museum Studies, or similar field.
    • Experience in collection management and/or object photography.
    • Experience working with American Indian material culture.
