Your Opportunity

Stantec seeks an experienced Archaeologist to join our growing cultural resources team in Minnesota. The ideal candidate will have strong field leadership skills and technical writing abilities, with working knowledge of cultural resource regulations including Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance processes.

This position offers the opportunity to lead archaeological field survey crews and take ownership of report writing from initial background research through final deliverables. Working under the direction of our Senior Archaeologist, you will serve as Field Lead for Phase I investigations ranging from small-scale surveys to large multi-crew operations, while developing your technical writing skills through comprehensive report preparation. The role provides hands-on leadership experience managing field teams of 1 to 10+ people and the chance to contribute your findings through detailed technical documentation for diverse clients across the Midwest and Great Lakes regions.

Location:

This position is based in Plymouth, MN. We prefer local candidates due to the mobilization from the Plymouth office as typical work weeks are Monday-Friday and weekend lodging is not provided.

Key Responsibilities

* Serve as Field Lead for small to large scale Phase I investigations, supervising crews of 1 to 10+ people.

* Write technical reports, including background research as well as investigation results.

* Contribute to technical proposals, including scope development, budgeting, and scheduling.

* Understand and implement local, state, and federal permitting processes.

* Under the direction of the Senior Archaeologist, coordinate cultural resource investigations across various sectors, including utilities (power and gas), transportation, renewable energy, and local government projects, including travel logistics and equipment tracking.

* Participate in and lead Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) initiatives.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Technical

Skills and Experience:

* Minimum 3 years of experience supervising Phase I archaeological investigations, particularly in the Upper Midwest.

* Experience with all phases of archaeological investigation and documentation.

* Expertise in digital data collection methods and GIS applications including ESRI Field Maps and Survey 123.

* Experience with archaeological monitoring is preferred, but not required.

Project Management:

* Strong knowledge of cultural resource permitting requirements and regulatory frameworks.

* Experience leading projects in utilities, transportation, or renewable energy sectors.

* Demonstrated ability to manage field operations and deliver quality results.

Professional Qualities:

* Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong report writing abilities.

* Proven ability as a field crew leader and mentor to junior staff.

* Strong professional network in cultural resources field.

* Self-awareness and good judgment in seeking senior staff guidance.

* Disciplined approach to field execution and safety protocols.

Physical Requirements:

* Ability to walk 4 to 10 miles daily over rough terrain.

* Capability to lift up to 50 lbs.

* Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.

* Valid driver's license with clean record and ability to travel between project sites and Plymouth office.

* Ability to travel for fieldwork, sometimes for extended periods.

Education and Experience

* Bachelor's degree in anthropology/archaeology or related discipline.

* Completion of an archaeological field school and at least five years of CRM experience as an archaeologist.

* Demonstrated positive reputation and relationships with agencies and environmental regulators.

* Expertise in Upper Midwest archaeology and field methodology.

Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. When conducting non-local fieldwork, paid travel time, per diem, and single occupancy hotel rooms are provided. Stantec fleet or rental cars are often provided. A typical office environment involves working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time.
