About the Job

This position is located in the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL), an interdisciplinary fluid mechanics research center of the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota. SAFL research is focused on the intersection of fluid mechanics, high-fidelity experiments, high-performance computing, energy, environment, and geosciences. We integrate cutting-edge experimental work at laboratory and field scales with advanced computational tools, data-driven modeling, and theory to obtain innovative, science-based solutions to real-world fluid-flow challenges.

SAFL personnel include affiliated faculty members, research and support staff members, postdoctoral associates, graduate students, as well as visiting researchers and undergraduate interns conducting research at SAFL.

Job Duties /Responsibilities:

(25%) Perform numerical simulations, data analysis, and theoretical analysis for water waves, wave-turbulence interactions, atmospheric and oceanic flows, and physics-based computational systems.

(20%) Develop scientific computing, high-performance computing, and data-driven methods for simulating free-surface flows, nonlinear waves, coupled multiscale flows, and complex physical systems.

(20%) Perform analyses of high-dimensional simulation data to reveal the underlying flow physics and statistical structure. Develop effective computational, reduced-order, and machine-learning models for complex flow dynamics.

(20%) Help the faculty supervisor report the research progress to funding agencies and apply for new projects. Present research results at professional conferences. Publish journal papers.

(10%) Help the faculty supervisor supervise graduate students. Lead the initial training of new laboratory members. Participate in and, as needed, lead weekly group meeting discussions.

( 5%) Responsible for ordering laboratory supplies, especially computer items, and overseeing the laboratory supply budget.
