How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities regionThe Facilities Technician assists Metro Transit operating division maintain 1.7 million square feet of office and industrial space divided into 10 primary locations. Maintains, repairs and cleans facilities, ranging from rebuilding, fabricating, and cleaning shelters to operating heavy equipment for landscape and snow removal to operating sophisticated automated HVAC systems.
Compensation and BenefitsHire: $40.70 hourly. After year one: $42.96 (Based on ATU salary rates starting 8/1/2025). After year two: $45.22 (Based on ATU salary rates starting 8/1/2025).
Hiring Bonus: $4,000 ($2,000 after the first 30 days of employment and $2,000 after successfully completing a probationary period).
Referral Bonus: $3,000.
Responsibilities- Perform fabrication, assembly, installation, repair, cleaning, maintaining, and operating various facilities, equipment, motors, HVAC systems, boilers, lighting systems, exhaust systems, bus wash racks, pressure washers, overhead doors, hoists (in ground, portable, electric and hydraulic), and industrial yard equipment.
- Perform building grounds maintenance work, operate equipment for lawn care and snow removal at all Metro Transit facilities, Park and Rides, and other metropolitan locations.
- Assist contractors, electricians and others.
- Cleans work areas and facilities, indoors and outdoors.
- Perform other related duties.
Any of the following combinations of experience and completed education in facility maintenance or related field.
- High school diploma or GED AND five (5) years of experience in performing building maintenance duties and with facility maintenance heating systems.
- Two-year vocational school program or Associate degree AND three (3) years of experience in performing building maintenance duties with facility maintenance heating systems.
- Required to obtain a Special Boilers License within 6 months of employment.
- Required to acquire a 1st Class C Boiler Operators license within 4 years of employment.
- Previous experience with large commercial heating and cooling systems.
- Previous experience with large commercial plumbing systems.
- Previous experience with commercial electrical distribution systems.
- Previous experience with supporting large commercial building operations.
Skills and Abilities
within first six months on the job
- Basic knowledge of the practices and procedures of building maintenance and repair.
- Basic knowledge of various mechanical, electrical, plumbing, pneumatic and HVAC controls and systems.
- Knowledge of the care and supervision in the use of strong chemicals.
- Skill in use of computers related to diagnosing or troubleshooting electrical problems.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate in English.

- May require lifting up to 50 pounds. May work near moving parts or equipment, in the presence of fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibrations. May also be required to lift more than 100 pounds with assistance.
