The Maintenance Worker provides a variety of skilled maintenance work to support Public Works and ensure the safety and security of County residents and visitors.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Three years of full-time work experience in highway/road or park maintenance that included the operation of various types of motorized equipment
  • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake designation, that is not suspended, canceled, or revoked
  • Must obtain and maintain a Class “A” CDL with 5th wheel Tractor‑Trailer, Manual Transmission, and Tanker Vehicle endorsement within six months of employment, at the employee’s expense
Desirable Experience
  • Build and/or widen roads and trails; road grading, cut slopes, landscaping, patching, placing bituminous and concrete pavements, shouldering, ditching, culvert replacement, street and/or trail sweeping, animal carcass removal, mowing
  • Load and/or haul materials such as salt, sand and salt mixtures, gravel, asphalt, debris, etc.
  • Complete and set up work‑zone traffic control measures in conformance with the MMUTCD for all operations performed within the highway corridor
Hours / Days

7:00 am – 3:30 pm, Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week. Work schedules are subject to change based on department needs.

Anticipated Pay Rate

$27.31 to $32.69 hourly

Washington County participates in the federal E‑Verify program. Applicants must provide the required documents for work authorization verification.

Selection Technique

Training and experience will be rated based on the required application material; top‑scoring candidates will be forwarded to the hiring department for further consideration.

Responsibilities
  • Snow and Ice Control: Plow snow, apply liquid anti‑icing and de‑icing agents, salt and sand, and remove snow to county standards.
  • Highway Maintenance: Build and widen roads and trails; grade, excavate, lay paving, and perform ditching, culvert replacement, and sweeping.
  • Park Maintenance: Maintain buildings and facilities; install, repair, and maintain irrigation systems; landscape; conduct beach and pool maintenance; perform plumbing and other facility repairs.
  • Traffic Management: Repair, salvage, install, and replace highway signs; create and design sign faces with CAD; fabricate signs; perform highway striping and messaging; manage sign inventory.
  • General Duties: Load and haul materials; document time and materials used; direct temporary employees; clear brush and trees; remove debris; conduct minor equipment maintenance; perform other duties as assigned.
Work Environment

Work is physical and performed outdoors under all weather conditions. Tasks include lifting and carrying up to 65 lb, operating heavy equipment, and exposure to chemicals, fuel fumes, extreme temperatures, and road hazards. Physical movements such as bending, turning, kneeling, squatting, and repetitive reaching are frequent. The role may require evening, weekend, holiday, or irregular/extended shifts.
