Operations HVAC Technician
The Operations HVAC Technician is a union-represented member of the Operations Department responsible for operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing HVAC, building automation/controls, and related mechanical systems throughout U.S. Bank Stadium. This position supports safe, reliable, and efficient building operation and event readiness by maintaining temperature, ventilation, humidity, and mechanical system performance before, during, and after events. The technician also supports general facility and event operations as assigned.
U.S. Bank Stadium, owned by the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority, is a multi-purpose stadium located in the heart of Minneapolis, Minnesota. With over 66,000 seats, this state-of-the-art facility hosts a dynamic range of events, including the Minnesota Vikings, concerts, family shows, college and high school sporting events, conventions, trade and consumer shows, community events, corporate meetings, receptions, private celebrations, and guided tours.
Since opening in July 2016, U.S. Bank Stadium has hosted 2,000 events with over 10.3 million guests.
- Operate, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair commercial HVAC equipment and related mechanical systems, including air-handling units, fan-coil units, supply and exhaust fans, pumps, motors, variable-frequency drives, coils, heat exchangers, control valves, dampers, and hydronic systems.
- Monitor and operate the building automation system (BAS), including equipment status, alarms, temperatures, humidity, schedules, setpoints, and trends; identify abnormal conditions and initiate corrective action.
- Troubleshoot HVAC controls and components, including sensors, thermostats, actuators, relays, contractors, starters, control valves, dampers, and low-voltage control wiring within the employee's training, qualifications, and union jurisdiction.
- Perform preventive maintenance such as filter changes, belt inspections and replacement, lubrication, coil and drain cleaning, bearing and motor inspections, damper/linkage checks, and collection of operating readings.
- Diagnose and respond to heating, cooling, ventilation, humidity, and occupant comfort issues throughout the stadium; make adjustments or repairs and escalate issues when additional support is required.
- Support event-specific HVAC operations by adjusting approved schedules, setpoints, and operating modes and monitoring building conditions before, during, and after events.
- Perform equipment startups, shutdowns, seasonal changeovers, functional testing, and return-to-service procedures for HVAC and mechanical systems.
- Complete assigned work orders and maintenance logs accurately, documenting inspections, operating readings, deficiencies, repairs, parts/materials used, and required follow-up.
- Coordinate and work with engineers, electricians, contractors, and service vendors during repairs, shutdowns, testing, commissioning, and other mechanical or controls work.
- Maintain HVAC tools, equipment, and parts in safe working condition and communicate needs for critical replacement parts and supplies.
- Follow all applicable safety requirements, including lockout/tagout, personal protective equipment, ladder/lift safety, fall protection, and safe electrical and mechanical work practices.
- Assist with general building maintenance, snow and ice operations, event conversions, and other Operations Department responsibilities when operationally required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Working knowledge of commercial HVAC systems, refrigeration fundamentals, mechanical equipment, and building controls.
- Experience using a BAS/BMS to review graphics, alarms, trends, schedules, and equipment operating conditions.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, equipment manuals, wiring diagrams, control schematics, and sequences of operation.
- Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills and the ability to use common HVAC diagnostic tools and test equipment safely.
