This position is located in the Electrical Shop of the Facilities Engineering Service (FES) at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. The Electrical Shop is responsible for maintaining, operating, and supporting the facility's electrical distribution systems, lighting, and related electrical infrastructure to ensure safe, reliable, and code-compliant power for all areas of the medical center.

Experience

A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Preferred Experience:
  • Basic electrical repairs or maintenance
  • Experience planning projects or managing electrical systems
  • Basic electrical theory in performing repairs
  • Use of common electrical tools and equipment to performs routine electrical work
  • Ability to independently plans and completes electrical work, selects appropriate materials/tools/techniques, and communicate work progress.
  • Experience working in a hospital
Screen-out element:

Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note:

A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements

You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination. Work requires regular physical exertion, including frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, kneeling, climbing ladders and scaffolds, and working in restricted or awkward positions for extended periods.

Frequently lifts, carries, or moves objects and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally heavier items with assistance. Operates hand and power tools which require physical stamina and coordination. May be required to work at heights or in confined spaces.

Work Environment

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, including in mechanical/electrical rooms, patient care areas, rooftops, and outside in all weather conditions. Exposed to hazards of electrical shock, burns, cuts, bruises, and falls from ladders, scaffolds, or slippery surfaces. Lighting, heating and ventilation in work area - incumbent is exposed to heat, restricted ventilation and poor illumination in areas such as equipment rooms.

Weather conditions to which they are exposed when working outdoors - all weather conditions from an office to environmentally controlled space, to excessive heat such as in the boiler plant.
