Software Engineer – Mainframe, COBOL

• Analyze, design, test, develop, operate, and maintain software products
• Write production-ready and testable code with full-stack ownership
• Create optimal technical designs following architectural best practices, scalability, reliability, and performance considerations
• Analyze failures, propose design changes, and encourage operational improvements
• Make design and coding decisions with customer experience as a priority
• Apply code-review feedback and conduct code reviews
• Ensure product development follows compliance and security best practices
• Apply software reliability engineering standards
• Contribute to technology transformation, innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement
• Critically review, prioritize, and size tasks for incremental delivery
• Anticipate and communicate blockers and delays before escalation

• Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience
• Two to three years of relevant experience
• Hands-on technical knowledge in COBOL, DB2, JCL, VSAM, and CICS
• Experience with Git Lab preferred
• Knowledge of agile software development lifecycle and Dev Ops principles
• Experience working in financial institutions
• Complete understanding of a feature, impacted users and flows, and feature purpose
• Understanding of algorithms and data structures
• Ability to define and fulfill solution requirements for end users
• Proficient understanding of architectural design patterns and best practices
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
• Ability to communicate processes and results with engineers, product owner, scrum master, third-party vendors, and customers
• Must comply with U.S. Bank policies and procedures, including the Code of Ethics and Business Conduct and workplace conduct and safety policies

Demonstrates expertise in software development with a focus on COBOL, DB2, JCL, VSAM, and CICS, while ensuring compliance with security best practices and delivering high-quality, production-ready code. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential for optimizing technical designs and enhancing customer experience.
