RoleTrack Maintainer Trainee is an entry-level Maintenance of Way (MOW) maintenance position leading to a Track Maintainer role. After successfully completing 2 years in the role, trainees are eligible to apply for vacant Track Maintainer positions. Trainees are responsible for completing all assigned formal training and On-the-Job training (OJT) assignments under close supervision of a Track Foreperson and/or Track Maintainer.
Education/Experience- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
- Ability to obtain a Class A CDL Driver’s License and meet ongoing DOT physical requirements.
- Ability to pass physical examinations, Rail Operations Rule Book and physical agility examinations and successfully complete Rail Operator Training Program for Maintenance Personnel to include On Track Equipment Certification.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to learn how to read and write track maintenance reports.
- Ability to work any one of three shifts – 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shifts as scheduled Sunday through Saturday.
- Ability to read manuals and perform the tasks described in the manuals.
- Physical ability to perform tasks associated with track maintenance, inspections, repairs and related documentation; familiar with the requirements of a signalized, electrified rail system.
- Ability to operate radio and telephone communication systems in compliance with regulations and procedures.
- Mechanical skills including the proper use of hand and power tools.
- Must be able to read and write and read a tape measure.
- Ability to work well with others and promote an equitable, positive, and respectful work environment that values diversity.

May be working in wet, humid conditions, near moving parts or equipment, in high places, with fumes or particles, or in outdoor weather conditions.
Physical Requirements
:
Incumbent must perform heavy manual labor, frequently lifting up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds with assistance. Must meet color and peripheral vision requirements. Able to work from heights with safety equipment and in all outdoor weather conditions. Regularly required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, handle or feel, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

There is a 2-year commitment to the Rail Maintenance department per ATU contract.
If you are new to the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (safety-sensitive positions only) and a background check. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable. Felony, gross misdemeanor, and misdemeanor convictions are considered on a case-by-case basis.
